Looking to buy a new digital camera as a (last-minute) Christmas present for my father. I've been very satisfied with my C-700 UZ, but I've also read very good reviews of the Canon Powershot S40. Does anyone have an opinion on which is the better buy?

IMHSO (In My Humble Skewed Opinion), get the Canon. I'm just biased.

Depends on what you want from the cam. I've got an S40, but since I'm doing more "real" photography now, the lack of filters or lenses is a bit constraining - I'm having to import a special adapter for it. However, as a general use compact camera, the S40 is very nice, and the higher MPix is always useful.

I looked at both before settling on the lower end Canon (S30). What I really liked about the Olympus was the lens--I really liked the "ultra zoom" feature.

At times I wish I had opted for that zoom. Having such a focal length range would be awesome.

I bought the S30 beacuse the reviews were good, and I really liked the RAW option. The other selling point was the Compact Flash card. I fully expect to buy another camera one day, and I wanted the media to be compatible. And since most of the higher-end digicams I was looking at seemed to use the CF card rather than the Smart Media... I went with the compact flash.

Alright, votes are unanimous. We've ordered the S40 (through the link on the site). He's really more of an amateur photographer, so I don't think he'll need the filters, etc.

Thank you all,
Martin

Aww, I'm too late, but I just have to say I am totally in love with my new Olympus C-720 UZ. Not that I've compared it closely with the Canon, although I did get to see that when I met Manic back in July :). So you may have made the best decision.
