I have a shot I am thinking of entering into the "4" contest this week. I would like opinions of it before I put it in. I am new here so, is that legal? I know entries are suppose to be blind but what good is getting a critique during and after a competition?
Thoughts and Thanks...

Dave, welcome to DPC. It is generally felt that it is not acceptable to ask for opinions BEFORE the challenge. Some people (and possibly most) show their shot to family or friends or another member of DPC that they've come to know.
The reason for the Critique Club which is after the challenge has ended is to help you and others learn from their percieved mistakes as looked at critically from another photographer. This entire site IMHO is a great place to learn. From reading everyone's critiques to tutorials, How'd They Do Its and Chat ROoms, you can learn a lot in a short time.
Good Luck!

Doug thanks for your thoughts. The idea of getting an opinion after a competition is sort of putting the cart before the horse isn't it? Personally I want the best photo's running up against me every week. If one is excluded because of something they missed but besides that the photo would have kicked my butt, well wouldn't that make it a hollow victory?
And also, since you said that some probably bounce ideas off each other isn't that giving an unfair advantage to some? Since that can't be controlled shouldn't it be offered to those of us that don't have any personal relationships here? So really some are getting Critique Club info before the entry and some (like myself) aren't? If there is a big enough network of that type of activity wouldn't it stand to reason that certain people could control this contest? IE friends voting friends high and "strangers" low?
Personally I think that critiques should be opened up for people that want them. It's not sporting that some should get and others shouldn't. But if it's not, I won't lose any sleep over it... LOL LOL LOL
I hope people don't get too upset by my comments. It is just conversation. I firmly believe that a good photo will win all the time. I just like a good debate that's all...

Dave, we will have a system in place soon where anyone who wants a post challenge critique will have the opportuny to request one.
I don't think we have enough manpower to give pre challenge critique anyway. If we offered that, it would be unfair if we did not get to everyone who wanted it every week...

Maybe I am confused but I am not sure how this relates to the Critique Club specifically rather than the site in general.

Something to keep in mind, while you might get someone to help you alon with your first couple of entries, that is no guarantee that it'll do well in the challenge. In fact I've seen many photos I thought were exceptional receive very poor scores... mainly because if the subject.
This is a tough crowd. I'd wager and say that half of the voters hand out scores based on that one-second-reaction... if it gives them a warm and fuzzy feeling or not.
Someone posted a photo a while back and my initial thought was, ugh, didn't like it... tons of abstract elements with this chick standing in it. But then it was explained that this was a self-portrait of a woman photographer, who is a breast cancer surviver and every element had absolute meaning. Threw things in a total new light for me.
I know that makes zero sense, but my point is... this crowd is almost as subjective in their voting as the general public. That being said, you can e-mail me your photo and I'll give ya an opinion (we all have one), but I won't vote on it if it makes it into the challenge.

In my opinion this sight is not a contest but a community where a weekly challenge with comment and critique, forums to ask questions and tutorials to help one improve their photography skills.

true ...
but then somehow it's good school that you submit the photo you think is the best, and then you can post your outakes to a forum and probably people would comment them.
Editing (meaning choosing the right photo) is part of the photography process .. a big part ...
I think you learn by trying , and taking risk as well ....

Hey everyone thanks for your comments. Great stuff. I guess this really isn't a CC question after all. JM you are probably right that the request for would out weigh the ability to.
I am not new to this online challenge stuff, just new here. I am absolutely blown away with the quality of images here. I entered the motion challenge and took 8th place. I was thrilled with that finish. I never thought I would get top 10 let alone 8th. This is really the first challenge I have been in where I really haven't second guessed the finalists. The Blue finalists were absolutely perfect.
On a whole I would say this is the best online comp I know of. It is hard to please everyone (including me :-) ) but it does a great job overall...
I will argue one point. This is a competition. Just because it is called a challenge or assignment or what ever, if you vote and have winners it is a competition. I am an insanely competitive person. I would like to be a little less competitive but that just won't happen. I will strive to be in first place every week. That is what fuels my fire. Some it doens't but for me it does...
Thanks to all again for their input...

You'd run out of ideas as a critiquer soon too. I have enought trouble already getting a decent four shot, no way that I want to make time to give others advise on how to do better then me. :)
The favorite body part is also a bit tricky. I don't know anyone who would like to pose and I sure as h*ll don't dare to ask a stranger. ;)
