OK, here is one of my HDR outtakes. Don't worry, it has nothing to do with my entry.

Here are the three exposures:

Look at the "correctly exposed" shot and how the upper right is too dark and the leaves are blown out.

Here is my layer work while manually adjusting:

Note that I blend them first, then work on other adjustment layers. The contrast adjustment has lots of masking to preserve the details I've won by the manual blend; the contrast was mainly for the midtones.

Final product:

I think the final result looks totally natural rather than the way HDR typically looks. I purposely left some blacks and blown areas for that reason, but the detail in the highlights and shadows attained would be impossible with one exposure.

Please do not post "outtakes" until challenge voting is complete, regardless of whether it is similar to your own entry.

Any other shot from your library can be used to demonstrate the HDR technique.

I know, I know, it's a drag but whenever we take a poll on it the "no outtakes" peeps win.

You have got to be kidding L2. Did you erase my work? How is an "outtake" that has nothing to do with my entry any different than any other shot in my portfolio?

How about we restore the email and I just erase the work outtake?

Thanks... I was under the wrong impression about the finer details there... I've also moved the image from my portfolio into my workshop until voting ends..

Cheers..

a little off topic, but does anyone use the photoshop cs5 merge to hdr?

To whomever reported my post: Think about it next time. What is the spirit of the rule? We don't post outtakes that either a) Give the user's entry away or b) offer alternative entries for very specific challenges like Balloons or Orange. Me posting a photo discussing HDR techniques during the challenge is neither. Can we not discuss HDR at all during the challenge? Why hasn't this thread been closed then? By this reasoning I should report every picture posted as they are all technically outtakes of the Free Study, are they not?

OK, I'll leave the snide comments aside and carry on now that the challenge is over.

Were we going to start another thread to discuss HDR techniques? I seem to remember someone saying that.
