It's in, and I'm off to bed.
Good luck, everyone! Here's hoping for sympathetic and understanding voters.

I know what you mean about being HDR'd out. I spent a few hours shooting today and got about half a dozen sets of images to process as HDR. I've just finished processing them all and have entered. I could probably play some more but wouldn't come up with anything better. |

I've had a bad case of 'No inspiration' the past few months, but I managed to drag myself out to take some shots today and process them. So I am in, but don't expect much. My guess is I'll finish around 5.4

Remember when mom used to say "Now don't say you don't like it if you haven't tried it. Take a few bites."
I didn't used to like HDR
I tried it all week, and never got anything I liked better that the middle exposure.
O.K. mom; I tried it, and I still don't like it. Tastes like liver.
So bring on your best, because my neon after glows and velvet paintings will stay securely in my workshop.

It won't, but I'll PM it to you as SC is not fond of outtakes being discussed in the forums before the end of the challenge. |
I'm aware, but considering this is nothing similar to my entry I figured they'd be forgiving... BTW, SUPERB shot.. Very cool!
ETA: Well, looks like I was wrong.. Thanks L2 :)

Like any worthwhile skill, it takes time to learn. My early HDR efforts make me cringe now. Hell, even some of my *current* ones do... ;-)

I like it, but I think I entered the right one. I put the outtake on Flickr last night and it's gotten a few views, but only one comment. |

This challenge is definitely easier for those who have done it before and have an established method that works for them. Hard to learn it effectively on the fly, when your entry is your learning experience. |

I think I got lucky with this one, in a way--I finally decided it was time to tackle HDR for my Free Study entry, and spent several hours mucking with layers and exposures in Photoshop for that one. I'd submitted my entry before the HDR III challenge was announced and was really glad I'd just spent a good chunk of time learning the technique. |

Definitely not a challenge for a last second entry if you haven't tried the technique before. I would hope that if it's something new one would research the technique, shoot lots and experiment. Time permitting of course. ;o) |

I HATE HDR!!
Ok, now I have that out of my system. I cannot for the life of me figure out the stupid tone mapping. I have my files, I've tried them in photoshop, photomatix, and some other stupid shareware thing, and also tried doing it manually with layers in photoshop. The all look horrible.
I'm entering the least worst of the bunch and will watch my average plummet (it was finally going up again after a good week. Ah well, easy come, easy go.) But after spending this long fighting with it, I WILL enter something.
blech to HDR.

Now that I've gotten that out of my system. Is there any tone mapping genius out there that's willing to take my originals, create something wonderful, and tell me how they did it? I know that I'm not doing this right, and that I could have gotten it much better, but I really am not having much luck figuring this out. But I'd really like to learn... |
HDR is actually alot of fun once you get the hang of it!
First off, go visit this awesome tutorial:

Then check your PM for my email address if you still want to send your images to someone to mess with them. :-)

But that's what makes the challenges a learning experience -- and a challenge -- the whole point of the site. Without the challenge we might never have tried this. :-)
I downloaded new software this week, drove somewhere and took shots specifically for this on Saturday, and spent about 5 hours playing around (including making some print versions) yesterday, and still had to make a final edit with less than 20 minutes to deadline. All that to get my usual 4.5 ... :-(
I think I'll process one of the exposures normally and post it for a side-by-side comparison in outtakes thread next week. |

Nice one Alex... Clearly I won't do better than this, so I guess I can forget about doing a tutorial :)... Very good!

Shrug.. Not a problem.
He is a bit long winded ;), so I guess I might be able to do a more directed (read: shorter) tutorial. And since that tutorial is there, this should be considered "supplemental".. |

One thing of interest I noticed in the stuckincustoms tutorial was he layered the original images under the merged and tonemapped image in order to bring some other details back in. A good thing to remember.

I did something similar to that this time around (which was a first for me). I created 2 separate HDRs from the same 3 exposures: one pushed harder and one more natural. I then blended the 2 HDRs with a mask so that the crazy sky and haloing from the one that was pushed didn't show through.

That's a good tip. I was wondering on a few how they got the clouds to come out so well since every time I try one with clouds, the clouds just look weird. |

Yes, I've done that a great deal, and quite a ways back I was pushing that approach in an earlier HDR thread. Works wonders when skies, especially, go wonky...

Drop the programs and do it manually. Regularly looks better in my book and I don't really remember the last time I used Photomatix. |
