I dont how good minolta dimage z1 is, it these days for under 300$ hence in pounds it must be cheaper.

Well it appears good to me on paper. i myself of buying a new camera in same budget as my old camera has devloped some problems

Pentax S30 or a Canon IxusII ?

If it's for you... I would suggest the highly-regarded Canon Powershot A75 or A80. Both are available for less than US$300. The Pentax and Minolta cameras use Secure Digital/MMC cards. The Powershots use the same CompactFlash cards as your Rebel, and offer full manual controls in a familiar layout, so you'll miss your baby less. If it's for someone else, I'd still suggest the same cameras based solely on their own merits.

Don't know if this is small enough, but you can now get a Fuji 602 for £219. Wow!
