Definitely legal. Using motion blur to create missed focus? Whatever. Its a great shot i'd probably give a 7 or 8. |

Ooh, that is a very sweet shot, nice job! But in this challenge it would get a 1 from me for just making me think of motion blur. Plus I'd kick the cat.

I never know whether you're joking or not and I'm not talking about the cat. Kick away. :) |

Well, just for that, I am going to give every motion blurred shot a 10, to counteract slippy's 1 vote. :P

Ahhh, I'm giving you all ones because you are all TRYING to miss the focus to shoot for the challenge. Since you didn't "miss" what you were trying to focus on, yer all just DNMC! |

Well, I'm trying as hard as I can to get my Lensbaby shots IN focus, but it keeps missing. So I am in great shape, right?

OK Robert, you get a 10. Everyone else gets a 1. :) |

The description of the challenge doesn't say that something has to be in focus: In some cases, having your subject be out of focus is desirable. Take a photo in which your main subject, at least, is out of focus. Other parts of your image may or may not be in focus.
lets just take a look at the previous challenge, the top pictures have nothing sharp in them, the 4th place is motion blur. |

I actually have one from yesterday where the focus was actually missed by accident, instead of being intentional OOF. But how would every body know this, so they can give it the 10 it deserves? |

I have a feeling that this may be one of those challenges that can be debated ad nauseam before the voting actually begins, but only when people start to really look at the images will everyone figure out what does or does not meet the challenge in their own estimation.
Also, I suspect that this relatively academic/ivory-tower debate will be completely irrelevant to 90% of the voting population.
But that doesn't mean the discussion isn't worth having! |

I have to agree that motion blur has nothing to do with focus... but of course you could have OOF motion blur ;)
My take on this challenge is to use OOF on purpose to better your image, use it in a creative way to make something beautiful.
Have to say the title and the description seem to be a little at odds...
