I have found that even when my entries don't score as well as I had hoped it doesn't really bother me if I get good comments from other members who I have a great deal of respect for. For example, on the Indecision challenge I was at a 5.8 this morning and now I've dropped to a 5.5, which was a little disheartening, but then I got a nice comment from Imagineer, who is one of my favorites, and all of a sudden the score didn't really matter anymore.
Just curious to know what other value more; good scores or good comments? |

I definitely value comments more...but useful comments are hard to come by...

That's how I felt about my self portrait entry ages ago in particular. I wasn't surprised at the low score - it was an unusual take on the concept of portrait and controversial too but some of the comments made it totally worthwhile.

I like constructive comments. Eventually, I'll get a score I like...

What's even better is when you find out that a comment you wrote made all the difference to a photographer. I hvd two such occurences yesterday, and those two people made MY day!

you know what's a really nice treat? having your photo clicked as a favourite during the voting period. it's only happened two or three times, but each time it does it fills me with a warm happy glow. it's like, someone on their own (not being influenced by the popularity inherent with a really successful shot) thought, i like that, i'd like to see that again sometime. gives me a sense of a job well done :) |

Having a photo picked as a favourite ANYTIME, during voting or after, is a thrill for me. I vacillate between believing that a few of my pictures are really good and "knowing2 that I'm kidding myself and that no one will ever think much of them.
Having someone pick an image as a favourite or buy a print of an image is magical because it means they not only like the image but that they love it!

Hi Todd...
It's difficult for me to put a value on one or the other. I always enjoy good comments but I rarely get any. I also look for a certain type of comment that seems to be even rarer in the greater scheme of things.
When I submit a photo to a challenge, I'm already completely happy with it, so scores and comments are not that important to me. I just like to submit photos occasionally. I like to get comments that let me know the viewer sees what I saw in the image. I'm not digging for technical comments or suggestions for improvement. Everyone has an opinion on things like that and I'm usually aware of any possible views of shortcomings when I submit a photo.
The number of photos up for vote this week will certainly have a negative impact on the number and quality of comments. Hopefully at some point in the future, DPChallenge will do some things to resolve some of the stress of voting on so many images on the same subjects :)

John,
Just know that a comment which provides the opportunity on someone's submission to improve their technical skill can make a huge difference. Such a comment you left for me. I immediately saw my error, followed your advice and now have a better understanding and vastly improved picture. For myself (and many others) developing the eye is a challenge and it's DPC members with seemingly "natural" abilities that helps us. Hence my reason to be a paying member at this fine site. Now lets get back to voting... |

I couldn't agree with you more Todd. The other day I hit one of those photographic lows where I considered putting the camera on a shelf for awhile and doing something more contructive. I did a quick check of my portfolio and found that an image was selected as favorite by grigrigirl, which made my day. I then found several good comments from members I respect, such as zeuszen and koriyama. This input was enough to get me reengergized and focused on improving my work.

Sometimes I'll get a great comment from one of the big dogs, sometimes I'll have a photo marked as a favorite, and sometimes I'll even have myself honored as a favorite. Any of those will put a major smile on my face, but the absolute best was when I got a PM from a someone who said his little daughter loved one of my pictures so much that she made him open it anytime he got on the internet. Now THAT'S pretty cool. Since I had no plans to make it a print, I emailed him a high-res file so he could print one himself.
I never did hear from that guy again...? |

I have to agree - someone picking one of my photos as a favourite really makes my day. Its such a great feeling.

I have just started out in the photograhpy world so some of the scores that I have gotten were not all that great. The comments I have gotten, although not the best because I am a beginner, were very helpful. Now my scores have came up a bit, but still not the best, but the comments I get are very reassuring that my work has improved. So I very much rely more on the comments then the score. |

For me it's pretty much all about the scores. I'm one of the few that treats this site like a weekly game rather than anything else (although, I have learned a lot here and love the comments).
On a personal goal level, what discourages me is the fact that my scores aren't improving, but rather staying pretty much level. Still, I boldly press on :) This site keeps me taking pictures ... and like everyone else, i'm addicted to it.
I still have a blue ribbon, an 8, and an overall aveage of 6 to get. |

Hey Toddhead, I see you like nice comments but from your Halloween thread I see you definetly don't like any comments perceived as negative.
So the good ones make you feel great, do the negative ones make you want to throw yourself into traffic? Hope not! |

It's a game for me, too, and I have the same goals. Well, two of them anyway. ;-p |

when i first started submitting photos here, the score and ribbons were my main goal. since then, i've come to realize that if i just shoot photos that i like and submit them to challenges where they fit, i'm much happier with my work.
of course, it's nice to have high scores and win ribbons, but to receive great critiques, to be chosen as a favorite photographer or to have one of my photos chosen as a favorite is what makes my day. :)

voters suck.
(today more than any day, but we won't go there.)
i have my scores turned off during the week. i've found the site is quite a bit more enjoyable that way. i don't submit photos that i don't like, so to see them get trashed throughout the week just makes me feel like crap. i shouldn't feel like crap about a photo i liked well enough to submit, so the score is pretty moot. |

I really don't mind negative comments, but I am very defensive when it comes to my daughter. I've never really gotten negative comments about the pictures she's been in here on DPC, but I think every picture she is in is the greatest, so I just know better. |

I always went for the scores until the poverty challenge. My photo was misunderstood by some, but it scored 4.69...lower then I hoped, but I got a record 32 comments!
My speed challenge is sitting on about 2.9, but it has 13 comments already. I decided after poverty to just go for impact, I want to get reactions...so comments count more at the moment, whether positive or negative. |

i would rather have 10 constructive usefull comments than 1 flattery comments. Flattery may make me feel warm and fuzzy but also stagnant, but constructive comments will make me better.

I did not vote in the ‘poverty’ challenge because I am by all earnings am poverty due to illness that has kept me out of work all year. For that reason I did not think I could vote without being bias, I didn’t want my personal experience effect my scoring, just my decision. It may have been the right judgment or not.
I like your photo it does represent poverty in several ways including the synonyms of poverty.
1. You ‘lacked’ the camera you would like to have: lack is a synonym of poverty.
2. You picture showed ‘poor quality’. Not being rude: Poor Quality is a synonym of poverty.
For those reasons, which make your photo meet the challenge and the humor involved I would of given you a 6. Good photo!
