Hi-ho,
John Park, one of the librarians at work:
I've been doing headshots for work (Mostly management and councillors) and any staff who want new ID badge photos are invited to take part. This is going to make a good ID badge :-).
I'd love to get some feedback on the lighting, and the overall feel of the image.. As I've mentioned in the forums (only 100 times) I'm self-learning studio technique at the mo.
Cheers, Chris H.

nice. I like how you didn't get shadows from the glasses. Well lit. |

the gigantic softbox is reflecting from he's forehead. Otherwise lighting seems to fit ID bages really good!
I dont know about the reflections in he's eyes. This setup seems to give quite pro looking results.
Do you have separate light for hair or is the light bouncing from walls and ceiling? Just curious, man ...

Hi-ho,
The lighting is two brollys with flashes, key on the right, and fill one stop down on the left.
The second catchlight in the eyes is a little distracting. For the managers/councillors shots I've edited it out, as the photos will be used in print and web media.
The only lighting behind is a small softbox on a dinky tripod, sitting behind the victims chair. I was going to sort out a light stand or something to do a hair-light but I didn't have time. This is with a portable setup, when I do portraits at home there is a handy shelf at the right height in the room I use as a 'studio' so I've never had to have a stand/boom..
Thanks for looking..
edit: Typo.

Yup, good work for an ID badge. Who knows, maybe it could present itself as a viable business. No tricky lighting, simple poses, sounds like a good experience to me! (ie not much stress).
I mean his skin is shiny, but hey, does that even matter for an ID badge? Probably not..now..if this were his modelling portfolio that'd be another story ;-) |

If it were a modeling portfolio, he'd have a makeup artist take care of the shine :-)

I bet 85% of the men wouldn't care for you to put makeup on their face. I know for a fact none of my men(hubby and 2 son's) would let me do that.

Not much stress for me, none really. Lots of stress for some of the folks having their photo taken. Some of the management staff were a bit sour on the whole process, particularly as in their case the photos will go in annual reports, on the website etc.
I was asked if I could do it the day before (I'm in the IT department, so it's a bit of a curveball for me) and the victims didn't find out until they turned up to lunch after a meeting to find me in the cafe with umbrellas and a camera. Someone who was meant to tell them didn't....
It has been an interesting experience. Given that it's not actually my job I look at all these sorts of things as a good learning experience. Doing the ID photos for folks has been a bit of a bonus, as we (The IT dept.) look after the ID systems, and the models are only the ones who want new photos, so they are a bit more willing...
Cheers, Chris H.
