Ok here's the deal. It seems that the newer 700 mb disks are not compatible with either my less-then-two-year-old laptop or my 7 year old desktop computer. On my laptop I can usually record to these disks but I can't read them so I can't confirm that the recording was successful unless I read them on someone else's computer. Not a very efficient way to back things up. I bought one batch of 700 mb cd's with no success and then I bought some more of a different brand with still no luck. I finally learned that I had previously only been using 650 mb disks. I know I probably need to go buy some 650 mb disks which are getting more and more scarce but I would rather find a way to update my cd burners so they can read and write to the newer 700 mb disks. Does anybody have any thoughts on this? I understand there could be another reason other then the maximum mb for a disk but afte spending time on the internet today I am pretty convinced this is my issue. I am absolutely furious by these types of incompatibility issues that happen for no good reason except for the fact that manufacturers just want to force us to upgrade our still-new equipment. Anyways, if someone could help I would appreciate it. It also appears that I already have the latest drive for my burner which is a Toshiba QSI CDRW/DVD SBW-241. Thanks.

What are you using to burn? If Nero, check overburning at: //www.softnews.ro/public/scripts/download.php?3_7_82

Of course if it is made to handle higher capacity discs in the first place then it can usually handle anything made prior to that but thanks for the response.
Mavrik, I could access that page but I am not interested in overburning anything (unless I am misunderstanding what that means) I just want to be able to use the newer 700 mb discs. As I said I can usually record to them from my laptop (one burn failed) but once it is burned I could not read the discs. My older desktop is even worse as it won't even recognize a blank 700 mb disk but also many others as well so who knows. I have some 700 mb discs that were recorded on by a friend and my laptop can read those so I have a hard time understanding this situation. I will recheck my settings again for the hundredth time. Btw, I am using Nero and Music Match for my burning with the same results on each. All I know is that I can't burn disks and that means I can't back anything up. That is a very bad thing when your hard drive is almost full.

I read it backwards, sorry for the original idiotic post. :)

This seems to be THE conclusive answer to YOUR question, however. It's not possible, stock up on 650s, and don't gun down any Toshiba execs.

You know I was just yesterday reading about this and can't remember the source but I do remember reading that not all writers support 700MB's disks. Have you look at the specs for this drive?

I don't want any more than 650 from the CD-Rs, my goal is to make standard CDs I can read from anywhere. It's not working to write or read any amount of data with 700MB CD-R media.

Stick with the 650 CD-Rs then. Since all CD drives don't support reading the 700MB's CD-Rs using the lower capcity CD-Rs will help to insure that most CD drives you put the disk into can read them.
I have three CD drives two on one machine and one on the other. None of these will read a 700MB's CD-Rs.

Ok, maybe that site isn't stupid but I don't like being posed a question without an answer unless you subscribe. Why don't they pose a sample question with a useful answer so we can have an idea if the site is any good.
I discovered that Music Match allows me to set the disc capacity to 700 mb and with that I was able to successfully burn and read a disc. So that is good news. The wierd things is that I then used Nero again and found no such settings for changing the disc capacity but I was still able to successfully burn and read a disc. Go figure. It is like the setting I change for Music Match also effected Nero. It could also just be a hit and miss kind of thing with these discs. If Music Match works, and I do like it better, maybe I should just uninstall Nero completely. I will have to burn a bunch more and see if this was luck or not.
I don't have information on my cd burner, it came with the laptop. Maybe there is info on line somewhere but I don't have the time to research it just yet.
Thanks for the help.

Since Nero Express [it came with my computer] has been brought up in this topic I hope you don̢۪t mind if I ask a question about it. I tried yesterday to burn image files to disc that could be viewed on my computer or DVD in a slide show format and could not do it. I tried to save as VCD and SVCD but when I put in my computer it will not play files it just shows the files and a lot of file extensions I̢۪m not familiar with. When I put the disc in my DVD it just shows the time of the CVD but will not play. Any suggestions? |

No, I don't have an answer to that except to look into the help files that came with it. Hmm maybe I should do the same for my problems.

I like to think I know what im talking about so here goes:
As your main concern seems to be backing up you files
1) how many disks, do you Actually use in the process?
2) how many MB does it take for your backup?
3) how long does it take to make the backup?
I would not recommend using CDs to use as a backup medium this is for such reasons as:
1) compatibility reasons ;)
2) time consuming process
3) disk easily scratched and corrupted
4) disk can be lost and are hard to keep track of
I would recommend - depending on your budget and backup size
a) Flash drive (USB) - come in 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB
I would recommend 256MB or 512MB
Portable
b) External HDD - come in 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, 120GB
I would recommend the 20GB or 40GB depending on what your backing up needs
Not very Portable
If your burning music onto the CDs - I would say convert to a MP3 players they come in various sizes as above and can store alot more songs, as well the free downloaded iTunes can convert your music cds into MP3 easily
iPods another option can store 4GB in the mini ipod and 20GB, 40GB, 60GB in the normal but are much more expensive - stores/play music, data files, photos, calendar & contacts
If you wish to do all the above but with a colour screen to view your photos you can do that as well but that will set you back a bit more money
note: I didn't mention prices cause well every country has there own prices but this is what i have
a - 256MB USB Flash Pen
b - Mini Apple iPod
cds are becoming redundant and won't be around/supported for much longer. so if I was you I wouldn't go investing money in a new CD Burner and/or burning software if I was you
anyway hope I was some help and that you think of some alternatives to use which will help you - depending on your budget there should be something on the list which will help your needs

Thanks for the replies. Eventually I would like to get an external hard drive but for now I only have cd's as my option. I will be spending more time on this issue later but for now it appears that I can do what I need to do.
I use only one disk to put all my images on. I know I should make two copies for insurance but time and money are factors for me. It is possible that I could lose files if a disk gets ruined but I do take good care of them and I also save the best image files to another folder that I back up peiodically so I always have more then one copy of my best stuff.

I use 700mb as standard for burning CD-ROMs.
Use Musicmatch and Nero 6, no problems at all.
Perhaps you have duff CD-Rs? I use imation.
Possible causes are that you are using earlier version of Nero, or you are trying to burn too fast? What speed is your CD-Writer? Try reducing burn speed in Nero.
Burn photos onto DVD, more storage space! |

I do not have a dvd burner nor can I afford one at ths time (starving artist syndrom) and I have had these problems with different brands of 700 mb cd's. Music Match and Nero are fairly recent editions.
