Hello fellow DPCers!

I went to a friends house Saturday night to take photos of her daughter and a friend before their Home Coming Dance. I'm still really enjoying my new strobes and am learning lots. Now I need to learn more about posing the subject. Anyone have any good book suggestions on this subject?

Please let me know what you think of the photos. Ones you like, ones you don't like, etc. I already know that I need to make the PROOF stamp a little more transparent so that it isn't so intrusive.

Thanks!
Bill

I'm a bit rushed right now and don't have time for a real critique, but I may be back later (in a couple of days).

My favorites are:

(I find I wish for a lower crop than this, not a lot, just a little more)

Stand up shots are really hard to take. My favorite of them all is this one:

Did you use any other background? I think many of the poses are great, I am a little put off by the background and perhaps the way the light is hitting the background. Most of the shots that people are choosing as ones they like are the ones where the background is a bit more textured and darker in appearance. I am no good with the proper use of photographic terminology so my apologies. The background seems too reflective or flat in some of the shots. I like the ones with a little shadow or a darker portion. The flat ones seem a little walmartish to me. It looks like they were having fun and relaxed. That is half the battle I would guess. :)

Wow, nice job! I can't get my lights to work like yours. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I like the girl laying down pic from your shoot, but I concur w/ the others about the background.

Here's my first light test:

Why do you say you can't get your lights to work like mine? Is the look here not what you were going for? I think these are very cool and very high fashion. I think they are great!

Post more and if you aren't getting the results you want post some examples.

I do not have a flash meter so after I get set up I set my camera to ISO 100, 122/s, and F11. Then I tweak the Aperture until I get the exposure the way I want it.

Post more pics. I want to see. :o)

So, you are enjoying the lights???

Sorry wackybill, I can't get past the muslin background. I know I know, I'm biased because I hate borders and muslins (it's a personal preference to never use either).

Some people like them, that's cool by me, but for young girls they usually want something more modern and simple (something that doesn't clash with their outfits - very important!lol). Letenele's photos are great with a plain background.

P.S. I know it was a HUGE trend (and still sorta is in some photography circles) to use the multi-colored muslin backgrounds, but look at big fashion mags and I bet you'll never see one!

A portrait photographer I know peruses fashion magazines and keeps a stack of pages pulled from those magazines with the poses that he likes. He has his models look at them as well and choose the poses they would like to try. Just another avenue for ideas other than books.

In the situation here I offered the girls their option of backgrounds. I recommended the plain white and they wanted to use the multi colored. Like you said, personal preference.

Some really nice portraits, but for me the upright poses are a little stiff - sitting, kneeling, leaning, etc all produce better pics.

I would have insisted they let you take some with the white background too, to show them the difference. This background really takes away from the photos.

There are some very good shots though. They must have felt like movie stars with all the shots you took :)

I would have really liked to but, No Time. They immediately left for the dance as soon as we were done. All of these were taken in about I would 30 minutes or so and not even all of them are displayed here. I was a photo taking fool. I do agree though that I should have gotten some with the white background.
