Do you just pass through once? Give them all 5s? Tell us all how you vote!
I vote on three equal criteria. Adherence to the topic at hand, photographic quality, and aesthetic approach. Each Photo is awarded a 0, 1, 2, or 3 in each category.
For topic; a zero has no connection to the topic, a one is low topic relevance, a two good understanding of a topic, nailed the topic.
For quality; a zero is a tiny-flat-lit-no-contrast-snap-shot, a one some effort was applied, a two good quality magazine or wall print grade, a three museum quality.
For look/aesthetic; a zero has no visual appeal and I must close the window to get it out of my sight, a one is grasping at something but not reaching it, a two shows good aesthetic appeal like rule of thirds or color space, a three rewrites my understanding of aesthetics.
If a photo gets a 2, 3, 3; i give one extra point, and if it gets a 3, 3, 3, I give one extra point.
So how do you vote? |

| I shoot fromt the hip but go back through several times adjusting scores based on all equality to all the other photos. Not as scientific, but I try very hard to compare and judge equally. I like your approach, and may adopt it for the next challenge. |

I first look to see if the photo met the challenge topic, then I look at the quality of the photo.
I try not to vote solely on personal preference. I may not like the content, but I can't justify giving a technically strong photo a 1 just because of that.
I usually look at the challenge photos twice. My first pass is quick and I make comments occasionally. My second time through I review the thumbnails and look at how I scored everything. |

| I do what dartompkins does, but i like your idea here. Except (and there is always one of these, right) I would, in both quality and aesthetics, put your "2" as three, and insert another category as "2". Then, add abonus point if the picture totally wowed me on any of the catgories. The reason: museum quality in 640 by 640 image? |

I am thinking of the original print. Not the web print. I shoot on 4x5 allot and can blow that up to virtually any size, but I find that the D70, and even my D1 Mark ii do not enlarge above 20x30 without fractal scaling.

I first vote by splitting the entries into three groups; 4's, 5's & 6's based on general assessment of meeting the challenge and quality of photo.
I then go back on a separate day and move each category up or down based on a more detailed view of the photo but still based on both challenge applicability and quality, with quality ruling the day.
I normally make one more pass (time permitting), on another day, to look at the top graded shots to vote either 9'sr 10's based on my personal preference. At this time I try to comment on all my top ratings, some of my bottom ratings (those I think I have something useful to say) and a few of the middle ground photos to make sure they get a comment.
I always vote challenges I enter as I think of it as payback for those who vote and comment on mine. I sometimes vote on other challenges.

Every image starts at 5.5 for me... First impression moves it 1, 2 or 3 points up or down... creative interpretation of the challenge moves it 1 or 2 points up or down... Technical merit moves it a bit more up or down...
Then I look at the shot for at least 15 to 30 seconds (usually longer) to see if I'm missing anything... Adjust again and click...
Later I go through all the shots to see if any are considerably better or worse than the others getting a vote and move them up or down...
