Thought I'd ask the sea of experts if they've experienced a similar problem...
Last night I was shooting the eclipse, and I was noticing that every so often my D100 would snap a blank (black) image. Perhaps 1 out of 10 or so were coming out this way.
So this morning, I tried snapping a few random shots to see if I was just imagining things or what, and sure enough I'm still seeing a couple blank shots creeping into the collection.
Naturally I'm sweating a bit here, wondering what kind of fatal illness my camera has decided to develop. Has anyone experienced anything along these lines? Is this a symptom of something?
I'm using a D100 with a Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 HSM lens. I haven't experimented with another lens yet to see if it happens with different lenses. The blank shots just seem to occur at random and at the same settings as ones that turn out just fine...
Please tell me it's something simple, and a little WD40 will take care of everything... :) |

No, can't say I have... I've reformatted this one several times, though. |

By the way, the blank images have all the EXIF data and everything... they're just completely black... in case this helps. |

one of mine got wet - and would randomly only record a 1/4 to 1/2 of the image, and the rest would be black - or severely garbled.

Maybe it's time to replace the shutter assembly. How's the flash sync working for you? |

I can't say I've been having any flash issues... although it's relatively rare that I use it...
(I definitely like Soup's prognosis better -- I can afford $39 for a new CF card! :)

well the shutter issue came to mind
how many frames have you shot with it?
has it been repaired already?

heya alansfreed..
just out of curiosity are these 'blanks' coming up during single shots or multiple shot bursts? sometimes multi-shot bursts will register a full black file after a properly exposed file if there is insufficient lighting/flash recovery before the next quick shutter trip....just a thought. :) |

No, it hasn't been in for any sort of repair... the first shot in my eclipse series last night was my 26,000th shot on the camera...
So, um, how expensive is the shutter surgery......?

The blank shots probably *were* all as part of a series of shots as opposed to shots taken one at a time, now that you mention it. I've never experienced this before, though, and the test I did this morning wasn't in a low-light situation.
I shot 20-30 shots a bit ago and couldn't get it to fail. Very odd...

did you change the lens yet? Could be it's sticky. |

Ooops... mis-read this... yes, I have changed the lens since last night.

yeps..i've had this same problem doing multi-burst macro shots which need very sufficient proper lighting and my flashes began lagging behind the shutter cycles due to dying poor power supplies...bringing up an occasional black frame...(because of the fast shutter speed/stopped down apperture).....maybe you can test during low-light conditions..

None of the shots I've had trouble with have involved the use of a flash though :/

I had blank images when I was doing long exposures and I had Noise Reduction on. I sometimes forgot that it was still processing and tried to shoot another one or even switched off the camera. I am not too certain, but the blank frames appeared usually when I did something like that. |
