I need a UV and polarizer filter for my new Sigma 18-125.
With a dRebel, would you need to go with an ultrathin filter so as not to get vignetting, or is this not a problem given the crop factor?
If I wanted to get a 62 to 67mm step up and use the same polarizer for my 70-200/F4L and my Sigma, is the step up plus polarizer a problem at shorter focal lengths?
Also: Buyer beware: I tried to get a filter quick from Amazon, so I thought I'd try the Cokin intro set (round, screw in) which included a UV filter and Circular polarizer for $19.95. The polarizer was in the case and it was dirty, and neither looks as beautifully optically clear as a B&H filter, which is what I'd been buying (but it's been so expensive, I can hardly "afford" another!

If you decide to get an ultrathin, check if it has a thread in front (many don't). Else you cannot use a lenscap anymore.

I can tell you that @ 19mm on my Tamron 19-35, I have no vignetting with a standard filter. I don't think you will have a problem at 18mm either. If you go with the step-up, it should be no worse than with the standard filter alone. I'd certainly recommend a step-up ring instead of a second polarizer. |

So can someone recommend a good brand? I would also like to know if it would be advisable to get a circular polarizer in my largest lens diameter and get step-down rings for my other lenses. Would that cause any problems?

Its actually a stepup ring but that works well. It can also save you a lot of money in the long run.

Step-up / Step-down... I'm sleepy... couldn't find my step-ring with both hands LOL
But what about brands? Hoya? Another brand better? |

I use hoya filters fairly exclusively. I'm happy with the quality. There are other brands that are as good i'm sure, but I haven't used anything other than Hoya and Tiffen.
As for the stepup ring, any brand is as good as the next.

I buy the multi coated glass filters. They help reduce flare and glare caused by the extra lens surfaces.

I just ran across this from a search because I was actually debating whether to buy a multicoated filter. His experience with Hoya isn't much different than mine. I had a Hoya Multicoated polarizer which I could never get clean using my lens pen. Got wet in the rain and then was never the same.
