Fine looking boy, Eduard. Why not set him up against a plain background and take a couple dozen exposures with varying light sources. You might get your camera down to his eye level to see how you like the result.

If you're using Photoshop CS then you could try the 'Lens Blur' filter. This gives a more realistic blurring affect from foreground to background than other blurring options.

Just a little too much blur. Here's my feeble attempt.

(Done with digital Image Pro 10)
3 Layers

Top = Child (soft edge applied)

Middle = Carpet around Child (gradient transparency from upper left to lower right)

Bottom = Background (entire photo) with 2.5 Gaussian Blur.

Soft edge on child gives a less harsh edge, Tranparency blurs (from background layer) near upper left.

You need to use a gradient.

OK...really pixelated due to size (not having the full sized image to work with), and kinda rushed but it's an idea... cropped so you don't see the potty chair (unless you want to see it) and after blurring the BG I desaturated the yellows and cyans a tad to lessen their impact. Hopefully from this you get an idea that works for you. Just a thought. :o)

I took Laurie's idea and went a bit further - cropped the potty out entirely, darkened the background and blurred a bit. He has an adroable face!
