I have been asked to shoot the Santa pictures at a mall leading up until Christmas. My problem is this....I don't have a system in place to have what I shoot go directly to a laptop beside me and then to print. What equiptment is it that this type of job requires?? AND is it worth getting the equiptment?

From a mom's point of view... every Santa picture I've ever had taken of my kids on Santa's lap has been a sorely overpriced, badly composed, usually out-of-focus, always too dark or too bright polaroid-type shot. Whatever you do, with whatever equipment you come up with, please keep that in mind and don't continue the cycle! :o)

Moms everywhere will be happy with you!

Congrats on the gig! All you need is a card reader to put the pictures on your laptop, multiple cards so you can keep shooting while your photos download, and a power strip to make sure you can plug in everything. On your computer, your best bet probably is, assuming you're using Photoshop, to set up an action to process each photo automatically (take some practice shots in that location to get your lighting right and to know what post-processing will be required for each shot) and then print it. You can save the action as a droplet and just drop a folder full of photos onto the droplet to execute the action on the whole batch at once.

Did I forget anything? If you have another software package, maybe someone else can help you with the post processing. Good luck!

I'll have to agree and disagree at the same time. I've seen many that are absolutely horrible. Then again I've seen a select few that are great!

To answer the question, you'll simply need the camera setup, laptop, and printer. With that be sure and take loads of extra paper and printer cartridges so you don't run out. Additionally, if its one of those time crunch-line-'em-up-in-the-mall things, you might want to have a couple of extra people on hand. One to escort and control the lines, one to take the shots, and one to edit and print.

First question I'd ask however is: is the Santa any good? I've seen a very select few that are fantastic. But unfortunately, the vast majority are really really bad. With the one(s) in mind, ask yourself if it'll be worth the shots. (and for an example of a bad one, go rent "Bad Santa")

If I'm not mistaken, you should have everything you need. If you hook up the camera via the USB cable and use the Canon software, you should be able to do tethered shooting. I'm going from memory of what I've read here, and I have never done it, so I may be in error. You'll prolly want AC power supplies for your flash units as well as for the cam.

What sort fo lighting? I would reccomend strobes. Make sure you do a test run to iron the bugs from your system,. Perhaps the best accesory might be a bottle of scotch { medicinal} for the nerves.!!!LOL

Congratulations on your job! I can't offer technical advice - but years ago I did the same thing for Sears for a Christmas promotion of
E.T. coming out on video - I had a great time and I am sure you will too! Hey - does that make me a professional? I'd forgotten all about that:) Best advice I can give would be - take your time and wait for shot - don't let people rush you - they'll appreciate it afterwards when they see the great photos I'm sure you'll take:)
