A friend of my 2 daughters has her birthday coming up.
She has braces and lots of freckles (is that the correct word?) and she is embarrassed by them.
Her father told me that she would like to have a nice photo of herself but she thinks she is ugly (yes she’s 13, so that’s normal I guess)
So I took all my gear, my lights my camera and my tripod and shot some photo’s. I talked to her, asked her to pose a bit, smile a bit more look differently, shot about 30 photo’s and they all turned out almost 100% looking the same:
(Pre setup shot)
Same pose, same smile...
When I was ready to leave, I talked a bit with her and her father, she was just being a girl.
Snapped one last shot and this pose was so much better then the others.
I played around with the posed shots but they didn’t turn out the way I wanted, they look like school photos.
So I turned to the last shot, but the background was distracting so I had to cut her out of the background with the extract filter in PS.
Got rid of her freckles but still I am not pleased with the result. Her right arm (left in photo) looks weird. Also her hair next to her ear looks strange.
What can I do to enhance this? It’s a no charge photo shoot, as a present for a 13 year old shy girlâ€Â¦ tips appreciated.

I adjusted curves and sharpened the eyes slightly. I don't see any problem witht her arm or her hair. Arm is out of focus and the hair is of a typical 13 year old. I wish I could post a link to the image but it doesn't seem to be working.
It is here: //dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=114889

I would say second is good one...and even beautiful.
The lights in first make her face look flat... but second is real nice...her lips look also much better and they look more natural then with that forced smile.
Dont know much how to improve it...it looks just fine to me... aswell the hair and all other.
Maybe just line of her sholder at left could be more smooth and sharp. |

Give her that picture and she might get a complex. Without the freckles, she looks like a completely different girl...just my opinion, I'd go over the photos with her parents because they're in charge and you're just the photographer -- so do what you're told, but if it was my kid, I'd want the freckles there because the way she is.

Thanx everyone.
What I mean by arm and hair is the artifects you get from extracting, you can see it best at her arm and hair...
Will try to do some cloning and local blurring, hope it helps...
About the flat light, yes that's true its a pre-setup shot before lights where setup propaly..
I'm not so good at lighting out my subject so I tend to make some foto's before the reel "shoot"

I agree with deapee. She needs to see that she can be beautiful as she is. Removing the freckles will just make her think "See how much prettier I would be if I didn't have these stupid freckles." Other than that I think the second image is the better one. She's a very pretty girl - what a shame girls acquire such complexes about appearances.

One way to enhance the "glamour" of the look without taking out the freckles, and to help deal with the arm/hair issues, is to use an old-fahioned oval vignette effect. |

I agree, I'd like to see the second one without the changes! Maybe in black and white or sepia, but taking away the freckels will just give her more complexes :/ |

I like the second one but you should leave in the freckles. Maybe do one each way and let her and her parents pick.
About the edges. Did you feather the selection? I don't know about "the extraction method", but it looks as if the rim is jaggy. I think someone posted a good method for preventing this about a month or two ago. Maybe gordon?
Here is one thread., although it isn't the one I remember reading. |

I appologize, but just let her be hoe she is? She may not realize it yet cause she is young, but she is beautiful. Just capture the natural beauty of her, and tweak here and there. Just my preference, but I love the natural look in portraits. Overprocessing makes em look like someone else. Just my 2 cents?

I agree with the people who said that removing the freckles could make her feel worse, but there's an alternative you could try. You may be able to de-emphasize them some, so she'll still be seeing herself with freckles but might think she looks better. (I'm having issues with articulating this, it seems.)
I don't know what to tell you about the picture you want to use, since there's no original for me to look at, but I tried it with the first picture and here's what I thought looked good:
Duplicate the layer.
Apply 3 pixel Gaussian Blur to duplicate.
Set opacity of duplicate to 40%.
The same thing should work on the other picture, but you may have to tweak the numbers a bit.
And of course, try to fix the jagged edges from the extraction. I use the eraser tool to get rid of the big ones, then carefully smudge the edge to smooth out the rest without screwing up the details.

Sorry for the late reply,
just woke up...
Removing the freckels was a request by her father. I said I liked her with the freckles but if her parents want one without them then that's not a problem for me.
She is a very sweet girl and I think in a year or maybe 2 she will realise that she is pretty too. (When boy's will queu up at her doorstep) :-)
13 is a difficult age, she's realy between a child and a young woman, she was alway's playing with my girls (8 and 9) but she get's to old for that now, or maybe my girls are to young so all they do now is tennis once a week...
Well, thanks for helping everybody it's much appreciated
