What software are you using? For cloning certain scratches it's best to get in really close and use a really small brush. Try using a brush that's not bold but rather one that is feathered. Dab with the brush rather then trying to try a line along it. It a good point to remember to change the clone sample as you move along the area that is being clone as not to make it unnatural and having the brush stroke appear.

have got ps7, but am very clumsy with it still. So I'll need to work pixel by pixel sort of thing? I really did mess it up with the first couple of attempts.

Man you guys are good!!!! When I tried that I lost the texture and details in the neck skin. I can manage the algae blobs (get practise on that one when I haven't cleaned the tank glass)....so just the clone tool?
Photo was uncropped, just contrast/brightness and slight curves, resized etc.

this is what you do,take the patch tool draw around the the scratch, click in the middle of the scratch move it to the left or right and let go of the mouse.

I just used the Clone tool, magnify the section you want to fix, use a soft edge brush for the clone tool.
Then just use one click at a time rather than holding down the mouse button. You have to vary the sample position sometimes for best results.

Heres another time saver. Do you have the ability to change the blend mode for the clone tool? If you do, choose lighten. It will only change the dark pixels and it will leave the light pixels as they are. Choose a sample that is just a tad bit darker than the lightest area you want to work on. |

Thanks travis, didn't know how to use the patch tool. This is really cool, saves a lot of time. I had tried cloning and that requires time and patience :) |

I've never used the patch/small scratch remover but I have to say it works like a charm on power lines in the sky. It even added the noise in so the overall pattern is the same.
Thanks Travis. |
