I was taking it all with a grain of salt.. this entire original entry was meant to be taken with a grain of salt. lol.

Me too! Especially since I only wrote the entry to be amusing in the first place.
See if I try and get a chuckle out of people on DPC anymore! Oy!

I totally agree with this.. I came over here at the urging of Dr.Jones who suggested I could really learn about "mass apeal" in a forum such as this one...and I'm lerning allright! many people claim to do photography for themselves...but get angry if their offerings do not meet with universal praise. in my last challenge (communications) I almost had the same amount of 1's and 10's !! go figure.... |
I WASN'T SERIOUS..
heh.

Ya want some cheese with that?
hint: the entire entry was meant for humor.. try and take that line in context with the rest of it.

Like a nice popup saying "You're about to jump on someones day - at least have the decency to explain why"..
Actually - come think of it a bit more - it's a really good idea. |
Nope, not a good idea. A very bad idea. You would have half the people leaving comments like "stinks"; and the other half just dropping the botom 20% of the voting scale.
Trying to calculate what vote someone (the last voter) gave you is futile. Even if you you do happen to coincidencially guess right there is no way to know if that voter will come back to your shot later and change their vote.
The voting scale is 1 thru 10 and every entry is eligible to be seen as any vote by any voter. It does not give you the right to call them names or disparage their honesty. Grow up and get used to it. If you can't take it, go to one of the sites that does not have anonymous voting. |
I wasn't in the least bit serious about any of it. If I was serious, I'd have left a thread saying something like, "Screw you hypocrites" ;)

What do you think? Of course not.
I've never had a comment from someone admitting to giving me a 1. |
Hmmmm okay
I give you a .....*drum roll* big fat 0 (that's right, ZERO).
Since we're spicing-up the forums. |
WOO HOO!
It's amazing how many people actually get their panties in a knot over a forum entry like this one. LOL. *scratches his head*

If you don't get other people's humor, there is no chance in H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks that they'll get yours!
(observation: you didn't get my humor from a previous post)

Now he knows that vote was a one. |
This can be right, but isn't always the fact. I have noticed a change of 11 total voting points between votings, that could mean that last voter voted with 10 and someone else have bumped up their voting by one, or that somone voted 2 and someone else changed their previous vote from 1 to 10.
And in this example that you mentioned, someone could have voted 6 and someone else lowered a previous voting from maybe 8 to 3, anything is possible but this doesn't happen often...
So it isn't a sure fact that someone voted with 1!
Just trying to mix things up here, you can never know for sure... hehe... ;-D |
As you say.. the math only really works if you use it for *each* vote change.. and not a group.
It only works for those of us up too late at night where voting is few and far between, and god help you if you decided to write an amusing thread and get your balls ripped off for it. lol

Actually, you can infer the votes if there are 2 or 3 or more votes. If there are 2 new votes and together they average, say 5.5, you could infer one was a 5 and one was a 6. It's not perfect because a 3 and a 8 also work.
I have a script that pings the update button every minute or so and records the vital stats. So I don't have to watch the site all the time. Makes time for actually taking pictures. [evil laugh] Bu wa ha ha [/evil laugh] |

Willing to share your script? What's it written in? I'd like to see the stats, but I don't want to push that button anymore!

And if you like to really punish yourself you can set up a web based query and let it track for you. Bummer is you know pretty much what every vote is.

You mean like that stat next to the words "Avg Vote Cast" on the lefthand side of the profile page? :P
What are the people who don't have entries doing when they vote a 1? |

I meant, it would be cool to see a persons 'avg vote cast' when they vote, somehow, just so you can see if they are voting you low because its their style of voting or because they just dont like your image. And I know those stats are on the profile page, I was just saying they would be handy in a situation like that. And for the second question, I was only giving a 'what if', so I assume that if people who dont enter are giving 1's its because its just their vote.

It was me. I don't see what the problem is, I was just going through giving every photo an alternating 1 and 10 :)
OK maybe not...
I blows me away to see 1's given to photos that are obviously not even sub 4, even at the worst personal taste... But, I'm sure worse things have happened to better people, and there is no money involved, so not a huge deal :) |

Yeah, and I have a script that not only tells the exact vote but also gets the voter's computer address and revotes again adding 7 if the vote is less 3, adding 5 if the vote is less than 4 and 3 if less then 5.
The above is done to help bring up these folks voting average.
lol lol lol lol |
