I have a photo I feel is one of my better ones. I could use a little input on it. I havn't managed to get a good photo in time for a challange, I was also wanting to know if the photo meets all of the guidlines for submitting to a challenge. The photo is in my portfolio.(It's probably to large to post in this thread). Thanks

Post a thumb with your message by using the right-most button above the compose box, and then inputting the picture number (found in its URL), like this:

Very nice shot. Good focus and depth of field. Nice job.

As per meeting the requirements, the dimensions and the size are both fine... In fact, you compressed it more than you needed to. The file size just needs under 150k and this is about 52k.

As per the photo itself, I like it a lot :) As Amason pointed out in comments left on the photo's page, the bug is a 'little' out of focus, but I wasn't as bothered by that as some might be. The texture of the leaf is great as is the curve of the leaf... Great job!!!

Lots to like in that shot, the background is nicely blurred; the composition is interesting; colors, sharpness and focus are good. Only negative in my mind is that it is very closely cropped on the right. I think a little more space between the tip of the leaf and the edge of the frame might have looked a bit better.

With that smooth b/g you'd probably have trouble making it 150kb, mysql. :-D

Good work there, tristalisk. The shallow DOF looks excellent, it's a shame the ladybug is slightly out of focus, but I don't think it detracts too much.

Agreed :) I was just pointing out the submission guidelines :)

Ah, fair enough. Yep - I always increase quality until I get just below 150kb.

Thanks for all of the great input. I cropper the photo so close to the right mostly because it went out of focus pretty fast on the rest of the leaf. Maybe I should have left it but the clarity of a photo seems to count for a lot. As for the file size I croped, resized, and left the file size alone. Is there a good way to keep to a 150K file size?

As Paul mentioned, the size in this case is a product of the background. When you save an image, use a compression that leaves you as close to 150k as possible without going over. This is likely at 100% so the size wouldn't change.

What post-processing software do you use?

Photoshop Elementals is a nice alternative for lower budgets, but I'm no expert.

Better than average is more than I had expected. I'm happy to hear that it rates that well. There is a lot of talent in DPC. I can be happy with par or close to par in here. Thanks for the encouragment and advice it may be just the boost I needed.
