I format my card as often as I think about doing it before I start shooting. It definitely won't hurt anything and it could save you from some problems.

I format my cards every time after having downloaded the photos and backed them up. Better than just erasing them.

I format every time. If I forget before I start shooting again then I just protect the few new ones and erase all. Formatting removes protected images so the next time I format all will be gone.

I had no idea I have to format the card, hmmm
Recently I had to buy new card completely, because the other one was distroyed (I couldn't even format it). Now, every time I make a shot, the first one is distroyed (the whole picture looks like uneven puzzles when downloaded). I thought it may be camera fault, but now I'm beginning to think it may be due to the unformatted card. Or maybe I'm wrong and I should buy new camera?

I didn't know that either. I've just been erasing every time. |

The HP PhotoSmart 320 Users Manual (page 25) shows you how to format the internal memory and/or the memory card.

I was using this at the beginning. After that, I was deleting pictures while downloading. I guess it is safer to use the "delete" option from the camera menu.

It's safer to format the whole card, as others have suggested already, than to delete. I may delete a photo or two, in an emergency, say, when I've run out of cards and space on the one in camera and want to take another shot. To me, this happens about once a year.
The consensus is that frequent deletion can corrupt a card or, at least, contribute to corruption.

Thank you zeuszen. Now it's clear why my other card stopped working. Man is learning the whole life I guess...

Rennie, if you still have your old card which won't work, try to load a photo to it from your PC. ie. Use the drag and drop method. I am assuming you use a card reader rather than a cable from camera to PC.
Then put the card in the camera and try to format it. Don't worry about viewing the card first, just try to format it. I have bought new cards which my cam said was 'unusable' and used this method to make them work.
good luck, and re-format after each time you transfer to PC. David |

Thank you David. I use cable and I'm not sure, whether it will work, but I'll give it a try.

You might try a card reader. For me the reader is much faster transfer. |

I obviously had not had enough coffee when I first responded to this thread. I DO reformat every time I transfer the photos off. On the F828 it's easier than deleting them. duh! |
