Ok, my SO went out to get waxed today and as she's getting her eyebrows done the lady starts coughing and blowing her nose and reveals that she has a bad cold. She's not taking the time to disinfect her hands before continuing her work and is barely covering her nose and mouth. When she gets home, my SO is very upset about this and asks me what she should have done.
We're both very susceptible to catching colds. I in particular usually get two or three colds a year that knock me out for a week each instead of the two days other people suffer through. I usually don't go back to feeling completely normal for two to three weeks.
I told her I would have just gotten up and left and would not have paid for the half an eyebrow she got done before the woman started coughing and sneezing all over her. It's completely unacceptable, in my opinion, for people to show up at work sick with a contagious disease. It's tantamount to germ warfare not to mention disgusting. The fact that in this particular type of business they are in close proximity to the customer's eyes, nose, and mouth make it even more heinous as this is where the germs will enter to infect the victim.
What would you have done? Would you have walked? Would you have given the lady a dope slap? Complained to the manager?

As the manager I would've ask for the employee to go home.
As the employee I would've gone home or not even come to work.
As the patron I would've left or ask that someone else completed the job. |

Not only is it just generally bad manners and disgusting, it's also against health codes and probably against some part of the ethics or standards of the cosmetology board of your state. I'd have definitely asked for someone else to complete my eyebrows, made a complaint with the manager, and then filed a formal complaint with the cosmetology board. That's just unacceptable to me and I wouldn't stand for it. Hope you two stay healthy and stock up on vitamin C, echinacea, zinc, and hand sanitizer. Best of luck to you and your sweetie. :o) |

I have been in a similar situation, but it was where a hairdresser was using an old brush in my hair that was obviously five years old and full of other people's hair. I know I was not likely to get anything, but this brush was really gross. I did not say anything at the time, but wished that I did later. The guy doing my hair did not speak english (I am in Australia) either which made it hard. I just made a complaint to our local council because I know they have juristiction over hairdressers, and they went and did an inspection of the place to make them put in sterilising equipment. I suggest your SO does make a complaint to the manager of the store to ensure that it does not happen again and that they realise people don't appreciate that kind of thing.
This stuff does sound kind of petty, but if it is upsetting someone then saying something does make you feel better. |

laurielblack.... took your advice and looked it up Article 12 Title 16 Division 9 Subsection 984(c) of the California Code of Regulations, Board of Barbering and Cosmetology... they can't have a cold and do the work. It's against the law. We also just took a preemptive dose of echinacea based cold pills.
stormy... sound petty or not it IS going to make me feel much better complaining about this sort of thing. As Fadoi said, as a boss, I wouldn't allow my employees to stay and in this case it's both against the law and simple common decency. In the situation you experienced I would also be appalled. Heaven only knows what lice, skin fungus, flesh eating bacteria, head cheese, or other general nastiness can be hidden in a brush that has been used on hundreds of people. |

Thanks, I was going to get a haircut tomorrow. What's that blue liquid that the combs are soaking in? |

Well as I said, I did make a complaint and got something done about it. But I still don't think there is much use stressing over such things (stress lowers your immune system) |

As a woman, I go to the salon more times than my husband would like to dare count. :D I get my pedis, manis, acrylic nails and toes and of course, hair cuts and eye brow waxing. The waxists' cold/sneezing is not only disgusting, but completely unacceptable. I would report her to the CA state board of cosmetology. The phone # is 916-445-7061 If you need more info, go to the nearest search engine and type in 'state boards of cosmetology. |

I've heard carrying a concealed weapon (gun) is good for this sort of thing. |
