I saw this little dude (ahem) hanging out on a big dead tree trunk and was wondering if anyone could identify it.

Thanks!

the snakes head was 6" across?

where was it taken?

Well by the looks of the head it's on eof the large constrictors, a python, boa, etc. If the head was 6 inches across, that IMO limits it to one of the python species. Not sure which one. Where DID you take this?

It was taken in a tropical dry forest region (Rincón de la Vieja) of Costa Rica.

i was going to say something along those lines, but don't know where it was taken.

I think central america has boa's, not pythons ... just a guess though

95% sure it is an "Imperator" Boa which is pretty common in Costa Rica but I'll try to nail it down.

That settles it. I am never going to Costa Rica... six inch head? hanging from the trees? eeep.

I believe that rscorp is correct in thinking that this is an Imerator Boa. They generaly tend to be a little more red. However it does look like an imperator. As far as the 6 inch head this is not uncommon :) Boas are cousins to the Anoconda.
