I voted on all the pictures. I commented on 25% of them and it was a challenge itself. At first I thought there won't be many good entries, but I was wrong. A lot of great pictures in this challenge. You just have to take time to go through all of them. I'm glad I did it.

Good luck everybody :)

I have a simpler solution. I think we should be able to see which members gave which votes after the challenge is over. I would like to be able to click on the 1 votes and see a list of the users who voted 1s. This establishes some accountability for your vote. (Same for all votes 1 - 10.) I think people might put more thought into the votes and be less likely to vote down good photos if they are aware that the photographer may ask them to explain their vote. Even if the users are unwilling to explain, the photographer may be able to establish some pattern in members voting that will allow them to determine if the vote truely says something about the photo, or if they should choose to ignore the vote. Example: If I am receiving 1s from someone who has never entered, or has entered and won only 3 brown ribbons, I will not give as much weight to that score and judgement on my photo as I would to a 1 given by the previous challenge winner. Just my thoughts.

I feel the same way. If I don't agree with a comment, I go and look at that person's work. Sometimes it's a fundamental, personal preference, difference, sometimes I disregard the remark after considering the source and sometimes I rethink the comment after considering the source.

Interesting idea...my first reaction was that I'm not real fond of the idea, but I can't think of any real reasons why.

I agree, it would definitely lead to more thoughtful voting...but I also wonder if votes in general would increase for the wrong reasons as well as the right ones...

Do you mean higher votes. If so, I think it is warranted at this point.

Sorry, yes...I meant higher votes. It is warranted in many cases, but I'm wondering if it will also cause higher votes because subconsciously people don't want to be known as the person who gave somebody a 3 when everyone else scored a photo 5, 6 or 7...that would be the wrong reason.

Edit: On a side note, my photo just got validated so I'll watch the score to see if people will vote more confidently now??

I personally hope that it never comes to public voting. There is already a percentage of folks who feel they aren't really free to follow there own tastes or art and still be recognized by the popular tastes here, but to also have to explain or defend your voting (hence tastes) to me would be the nail in the coffin for some of the diversity of tastes. I thnk some people would tend to feel out of place if they discovered they honestly found an entry to be a "4" and the larger percentage deemed it an "8", etc. I know that for myself, there were a couple of entries in the Master's Challenge I didn't think were "incredible", but I think I would probably get a rant or two going if I were ever to voice that to some here. Anyway, I hope voting stays anonymous and we can all live with the resulting scores, however arrived at. It is a fun learning experience first and foremost.

Personally, I found no fewer than 4 entries in the Masters challenge to be at a level where they'd probably end up with a 4.5 - 5 in any regular challenge.. so I agree with you totally that not everything there is "incredible" :) As for the rest of this thread, I also agree. Voting *needs* to stay anonymous, for the sake of everything. The last thing I need is 30 private messages yelling at me for not giving a person the score they *THINK* they deserve.

Well, sure enough...after spending a good chunk of time at 5.11, my photo was validated and my score has slowly climbed back up to about 5.24. That's not enough to convince me that the This photo has been validated line helps the vote, but it sure lends credence to my theory!

Laurie and aerogurl, perhaps you have misintrepreted the challenge. You see, it meant to take a picture of a small shiny metal object, obviously a piece of a larger machine thingy. In fact, it has to be a wing nut! It should be against a solid black background, with nothing else showing and should be no more and no less than 2-3 feet from the lens at a hight of 3.5 - 4 feet from the ground. Lighting should be from the right top and only one shadow allowed (if any). Extra points if taken thursday between 6:37 and 7:09 pm. This is the correct intrepretation and the only one that could even possibly be correct, so if this isn't your shot, than you don't fit the challenge and consider yourself lucky that the voting scale only goes as low as 1.

(disclaimor: this is only a sarcastic example, I don't think I recall any shots in the challenge that are actually like this, no offense to anyone or any shots intended)

LOL I just came across an entry which is just like this. 109214, open it after the voting.

I know people will grimace, but I have a secondary part of this solution, which changes everything, hopefully for the better:

1) There will be 4 challenges per two-week period (all at once unlike now).
2) Members may enter 2 challenges; non-members 1 challenge per two week period
3) You may only vote for challenges you don't enter
4) You may comment on any photo in any challenge

I believe that everyone should be allowed to enter every challenge that they are eligible to enter. Not letting a person vote in a challenge they entered is not a solution in my opinion. I would like to see the site set up where you could not view your average during the challenge but still be able to view comments. As I suggested before maybe an up arrow icon if your score is going up and a down arrow icon if you score is going down. Just my 2 cents.

By the way I̢۪m not saying this because I̢۪m not a member. I plan to become a member as soon as I can afford it. See I̢۪m currently out of work because of illness and have been since the first of the year. So I want to be a member and hope to be one soon. I know $25.00 don̢۪t sound like much but when your wife is the only one working and you have two children under 18 years old they take priority over everything. I have a wonderful wife and two wonderful children and it̢۪s hard on them at this difficult time. They are the true hero̢۪s in my life.
