how about instead of ribbon for 4th to say 10th place give a sign that says "Top 10" and in the profile then you would see
one Top 10 sign with a X 2 if you have 2 pictures in top ten.

don't know if this will look right: (ascii graphic)
________
|_T_o_p__|
|__T_e_n_| X 4

In most competitions in the world we have 1st 2nd 3rd, gold, silver, bronze - why sould DPC be any different?

Yeah why not, it would be nice to achieve "Top ten" note but not as nice as a ribbon.
No need to validate.
Still rewards excellence.

Why shouldn't it? The fact that DPC is different than almost every other photo of the day/photography contest website out there is what makes it so popular.

Conformity should never be used as an excuse to hold something back. There are a lot of other half-decent reasons for not giving out more ribbons, but doing it just because everyone else is doing it... nah.. doesn't work for me.

By that reasoning why not give ribbons to the top 100.

Because there are other, far more valid reasons, for not doing so.

Such as those for not having ribbons for 4th and 5th?

They aren't as strong when you go down to that level. Anyway, I'm not arguing for or against.. personally, I don't *really* care either way. It'd be cool to see it, but big deal if it doesn't happen as well.

I just refuse to ever accept "Everyone else does it this way, so why should we do it differently?" Nobody would ever get anywhere that way.

Whilst i don't agree with 4th and 5th I do agree with your logic about "Everyone else does it this way, so why should we do it differently?"

Top 1 to 3 ribbons would be consolation prizes.

Then why would anyone want to come in the top 3?

Me Three (sorry, I couldn't resist, I've always wanted to say it ;-)

Let me elaborate on this. Call it ribbon, honorable mentions or whatever, It's a matter of exposure and acknowledgement. So maybe just having an outstanding link on the home page, below the three ribbon winners saying "Honorable mentions" or something like, to a page containing the top ten and from there to the rest of the crowd (me included :) will do the trick.

This isn't a lot of coding, make it easier for the visitors to get into the site depths and to the top placed pics to be more accesible.

As Bob said, a clear and obvious "print available" tag close to the thumbs would be a great addition too.

Hope it helps

This is already in place. Click on the name of the challenge that is just above the winning entries and it will take you to a page with the top 10 on it.

Yep, David, I know. And from there to "show full results" and...

People tend to click on pictures and not snoop around looking for links embeded into text, which isn't even underlined until you roll the mouse onto. That's why I said outstanding, so you don't have to figure out where the link to the full results is. Just a way to improve the top ten exposure (pun intended ;-)

Besides, as the link and page are already there, it shouldn't be a great deal recoding. Some here and there...

Let's not and say we did.

I say we only give out 1 ribbon like the greeks in athens did long ago. There is never 2 winners just 1 winner. All the others are just entries.

let's get it over with and just start scoring it like the real Masters. The lowest score for the round gets a green jacket.

Another vote for No from me.

Although I'd rather not have a "Top Ten" logo/button, I wouldn't be totally against it...but I am totally opposed to ribboning the top 5.

We all know how special it is to get a ribbon, but a fourth place finish is special because it's a fourth place finish...a ribbon wouldn't change it a whole lot for me.

No, the lowest score gets a "brown" Jacket. Green is 4th place. ;)

Or a green jacket dragged thru the mud!;D

I've seen honourable mention in a lot of competitions. I might be nice here as well. I think ribbons for the first three is enough.

How about a shoe-phone icon instead of a ribbon? "Missed it by THAT much."

Let's see if anyone understands the reference. ;-)

I know it has been, what, 17 hours since this thread begun, and the SC still has not acted on it.

We are discussing/pondering it.
