If you are absolutely sure that your image is legal, you should take the DQ request as a compliment, smile and enjoy. |

Mike, I would not mark down an image because I thought it might be a cropped down whole image. I have though that about a few of the images I've commented on so far. Even if an image is cropped its because the photographer had the "eye" to see the image within the image.
For me seeing the shot is 90% of the artistry of the whole thing. The enhancements in PS or whatever package are just that, enhancements. But hey, that's a whole thread of its own, which no doubt has been thrashed to within an inch of its life on many an occasion.
A part is a part, right?

"I'm so misunderstood!"
Oh man...I feel like I'm in high school again, with my tattoo and bag of weed!
In my post, I was referring to a few specific pictures that looked like they had very little thought put into them. As if, by taking an "incomplete" or "seemingly sloppily cropped" picture, they've met the Parts challenge.
I hope that makes sense! |

No I think its me that's misunderstood, can we form a support group ;-)
I thought I was backing you up not having a go, I'll have to re-read this long thread.
But yes it does make sense, but I'm not sure that I could pick many of those out from the crowd, even if I tried.

Either way, I agree with what you said, my misunderstood friend! |

As this is a thread about the current challenge, I have something to say about it. I missed it!
I'm a relatinvely new member and had fully intended to enter I have a shot ready. But, probably my fault, I didn't relise that you could submit an entry then change it for another if you got a better one before the challenge had closed. So I hung onto it and hung onto it hoping for a better shot.
Then I somehow missed the closing date???? Never was any good on dates, a different story alltogether.
Now I don't think for one minute that this would have been a winning entry but I think it would have not been last. Having scored all the other entries and commented on what seems like loads.
I just feel better having said that, that's all.
I'm learning more and more each day!

Funny you should say that...I almost missed it as well and you know why?
My watch has a number for today's date and everytime there's a 30 day month I get screwed up for the first few days of the next month.
That is, on Sept 30th my watch said "30", on Oct 1st my watch said "31", on Oct 2nd my watch said "1" and so on...
I'm glad I decided to edit and submit last night (one day early, I thought!).

ya, but trust me, taking a picture of a person and saying 'its only the front part of him' wont fly very well... its technically a loophole to the challenge, but its not one that voters will credit you for discovering. |
Photograph 'part' of something. Do not photograph the entire subject. Be creative with your angle and approach to your subject.
I have read this thread and others on interpretation. To me after reading it a couple of time it was obvious what the meaning was, but that's my opinion. Below is a one example of my interpretation of this challenge.
Example:
Subject: Broken Bottle
Wrong interpretation: Take a picture of the broken bottle thinking that because some is missing it fits the challenge.
Right interpretation: Take a picture the jagged edges of the broken bottle would meet the challenge.
[Thinking a broken bottle would meet the challenge is wrong because isn't the broken bottle your subject. Therefore you have taken a picture of your complete subject. But if you take a picture of the jagged edges of your broken bottle then you have meet the challenge].
Just my opinion and 2 cents!

I disagree...kind of. I took a picture of a "broken bottle" for this challenge.
Actually, I more agree with you than disagree, but I really like my photo! |

I am so sorry for using the broken bottle thing as an example. I rushed through the entries to see if I saw a broken bottle before using it as an example. I honestly did not see a broken bottle when I looked through the entries, maybe just to many photos for my mind to process quickly. My post was NOT in any means directed towards your entry. I wish you the BEST of luck in this challenge and again offer my apologies for my example being close to your entry. |

Oops...sorry, you misunderstood. I put "broken bottle" in quotation marks. I didn't actually photograph a broken bottle, but your example describes exactly what I did with another subject. |

I think Mike is having you on, I can't see a broken bottle either.
But anyway, I think a broken bottle, entire or otherwise would meet the challenge.

Some nice shots in your portfolio Mike, although you had competition from Xion in the Smoke challenge.
So you've figured out the DPC voters have you?
Care to share?

Can't wait. Had mine a few months but I haven't really put it though it paces yet, this site is the inspiration I needed I think.
This is a bit off topic but, had any problems with any of your lenes for the 300D?

I only have the kit lens so far and no problems...I've only taken about 100 photos though.

OK, I had a couple of lenes from my non-digital Canon SLR. One was a Sigma, (wide angle).
Anyway when I got the 300D it seemed ok at first but stangley it gradually developed this fault where it wouldn't close down the appature when shooting. Eventually it wouldn't do it at all and as soon as I touched the shutter release the camera came up with an error 99 in the display. Which the book says is an unknown error, like helpful that is....
After much head scratching and web searching |I found that Sigma would fix the problem if I sent them the lens (only if I had the original receipt), for free.
They did it, eventually, about two months it took!
Upgraded the lens in some way so it could comunicate with the camera ok.
Worth knowing if you are going to buy any second hand lenses.

This is why I like this site; we can debate on a challenge.
I have to disagree. Say you were in a photography class and the teacher [professor] placed 2 bottles on a table one broken and the other not. He/she told you that you could only take a picture of 1 bottle, sounds simple enough. You make your choice on which SUBJECT to take a picture of, broken or non-broken bottle. Either way each is there own subject. Just because you may have taken a picture of the broken bottle does not mean you took a 'part' of the subject.
