very rare that I have outtakes for a challenge, but for this one I have a few

Let me know how would you rate these? my submisison doesn't resemble any of this and I hope I made the right choice :D

I really like that central one... you have nice detail in the eyes. Nice detail in the fur too.

I only have one outtake - I like the foreground well enough but the background is just too busy. The shot just doesn't have any ooomph to it and if it doesn't excite me in any way I can hardly expect others to like it!

It probably would have done marginally better than my actual entry (currently at 4.29) but I was more interested in getting feedback on the one I entered. I'm not surprised at the low score on the entry either to be honest, it's not a good shot technically. I would be interested in whether people like the idea or not.

If anyone is bored and would like to comment on some of my images, please have a look at my portfolio and view the DSWF Kenya folder. That includes some wildlife images I'm really proud of!

Fascinating shots. I did not enter this challenge because it specifically said wild life in their natural habitat. Since I like big game, I was not going to go to Africa and the other specimen's available, such as in swamps and the woods do not really appeal.

Thanks Kavita, Dan and Yura.
Actually I spent 2hrs at the SFO zoo to get these shots and it was too cloudy and a little foggy so wasn't expecting much, but the shots came out nice, I think.
Yes these are zoo shots and I know some ppl will vote it down for that, but I have tried to keep the 'zoo artifacts' away from all these.

I like the one licking her chops. So difficult to capture a lioness in action ...

Here's one outake taken during a dreary day at a local duck pond. Either they were all depressed and sleepy because the day was gray or they were ashamed because they are all, let's face it ... quacks.

My only Outtake in this Challenge

I really liked it and it wasn't too easy to get, but I wondered if his background was too messy for the Challenge. He does have beautiful colors...

I didn't enter this challenge, but this is was one of my possible entries:

I guess I thought that it would not score remotely well because it wasn't exotic or wild enough.

I thought seriously about submitting this :

OR :

This rattler fell into my pool, and I figured that although he is totally natural (and dangerous), and although he natually fell in there on his own, that I would get tons of 'not natural environment' comments. Plus, the flash blew him out too much!

I dont normally do the outtake posting during a challenge but even though they are outtakes I still like them. Had such a hard time deciding what to submit :(

I tried a few action shots, but they didn't come out that well

Very nice, moodville...what lens were you using in that first photo?
10/04/2004 12:23:21 PM · #13
jbeazell- your first outtake and sfalice's bobwhite are both just a little Photoshop away from ribbon contention. I hope your entries are scoring well!

Edit- same goes for your river otter, Moody.

All excellent, all taken in the wild ... any would have done well in my book.

Good shots, Laurie. I like the elephants the best. Unfortunately, most of your outtakes just scream, "zoo." I have no problem with those who went to the zoo for this challenge, but it shouldn't be too obvious or you'll suffer in the voting. Your best bet is to either blur the background, crop closely, or get down low so you only see the trees and sky behind your subject.

atsxus, your third gorilla outtake might have scored well just for the humor alone if titled appropriately-
"Yeah, I got your photo right here!"

LOL! Thanks, Scalvert. I titled it "Dont Event THINK About It"! But I like yours better.

You should have entered it, the challenge was wildlife, nothing about it having to exotic...I think this a mistake alot of people have made with their entries...thinking wildlife means big cats etc. There is plenty of wildlife in our cities and towns.

I just knew I posted the wrong one. I had five to choose from, so here are the other four (submitted is completely different).

Oh, and only one of these was taken at the zoo.
