Earlier I started a topic on the fact that I was upset about an Idea I had being used in another challenge before I could execute it.
Well, here is what I had planned to do (kinda).
Obviously, I decided not to submit it. Looking for honest critique. there's two versions. One of the reasons I decided not to submit is because I couldn't complete it within the contraints of the basic editing rules.

Well, to be honest I wouldn't score it above 5, but I am brutal with my scoring.
Reasons: The theme to me says that I should be looking for a part of something, and I guess I interpret that to be a single object. I would also be looking for an unusual 'view' or composition. The second of your images is neither unusual or special in this respect. To me it shows two objects in total, not part which sort of breaks the theme.
I understand that it could be viewed as part of the set of things, but I don't know that without seeing the other image too.
I hope that might help you in deciding what to submit, maybe a different viewpoint to your own interpretation. |

Is it that difficult to tell that there is a piece of the candle missing. Considering it is floating in mid-air. |

I never noticed that, but then I am using a laptop which is not calibrated, so ... yes I guess so.
The rest of the image lighting is dark and it wasn't obvious. Now you have told me I can see it, but ... if it doesn't smack the voter in the face ...

The problem is, you are supposed to photograph a part of something, not a *missing* part of something.. and that part of something really should be the main focus and subject of your piece. As falc says, if it doesn't smack you in the face.. you're going to lose the points.
I'd give it a 4 or a 5, even noticing the missing candle bit. The subject isn't clear, the lighting is dark and ambiguous, the flower is too bright and fuzzy, with no real detail, and the perspective and composition are flat and not very interesting. These are just my opinions, so take them as such.

Challenge Details:
Photograph 'part' of something. Do not photograph the entire subject. Be creative with your angle and approach to your subject.
I interpret this challenge as almost on the verge of a free study. Every photographer gets to choose his/her subject may it be a person, place, or a thing. Then the photographer must take the photograph in such a way that the entire subject is NOT shown. Then be creative in his/her angle and approach.
· Pick a subject; any subject
· Photograph subject in a way that the entire subject is not Visible.
· Be creative in your angle.
· Be creative in your approach.
As said in another thread earlier in the week, if the subject is a person then take a picture of a portion of the person. If your subject is the face of a person, then take a picture of a portion of the face, if your subject is the ears of a person then take a picture of a portion of the ear, etc.
I looked through the gallery and feel this is a good example:

You're definitely on the right track.. As for the eye, some people might argue that while an eye is a part of a person, the photo makes the eye the subject, and therefore it's not a part of an eye, it's the whole eye, and they'd vote low. LOL...
Yah yah, I'm being purposely picky, but man.. in open challenges, the voters can be freaking HARSH

Your are right but everything is a part of a part of something. I think in this challenge there will on be a 5%black-90%GREY-5%white area. Technique and aproach is going to be the main voting, i think.
The only way to assure that you have the true part is if you can photograph an atom. I don̢۪t think we will see it in this challenge LOL.

Is an atom not itself its own part? Then how about the electron or nucleus? Same rule applies. Damnit :)
I don't think it's that difficult, but if you DO focus on a part that is frequently perceived to be its own object, yes I think you'll suffer in the voting. In this regard, I think the other three photos offered up better serve the "part" definition of the challenge.
It's somewhat of an abstract challenge in my eye. (hah) |

Yes I beleive you are kind-a right on the abstract thing BUT in this challenge I don't think you need to keep the voter guessing what your subject is. [A part of a subject at the same time NOT to lead the voter in a way of wondering what the subject is]. |
