Unfortunately, down the road, if someone goes back & sees ones & twos, they don't know your scale was shifted. I'll continue to use my normal scale. I can't see giving a low score to a good image, just because it's a (less impressive) part of an impressive population.

This is a very fair point. But given that I'm consistent across images, and what they will likely pay more heed to is the results not worry about individual scores I don't think it will matter long term.

LOL, certainly not, however when you share, you are effectively putting the idea up for debate. Perhaps some of us are not as eloquent as we might be, but don't take offense. The discussion/debate is part of the fun.

I'm totally cool to discuss merits (or not) of the idea. What I don't like is having my right to share the idea questioned. It's like it's not cool to share the scale because he didn't like it???

10 = good
1 = bad

Says so right there on the voting scale.

Instead of having 50 images at a generic 'normal' 7 you have basically opened up that 7 within a larger point radius as if it was 7.1, 7.5 etc. In the majority of challenges 'most' people start at 5 and adjust higher or lower depending on taste, but there are normally a more definite and larger range of images for those ranks.

That said, in the minds of 'most' people a 1 will equate to a 1 in their voting scale, which basically states that it was the most horrendous image they have ever entered. I believe that is what people are going to react to instead of 1 being the lowest in this particular challenge.

You've understood my reasons for adjusting my scale perfectly.

It's certainly going to be interesting to see the reactions. I had posted this thread so that people would at least understand how I felt about their image if I was giving it a 1 or a 4 or whatever. I am sure that won't make them feel delighted about getting a 1 but hopefully will at least explain where I am coming from.

Bad is relative. In my world, anyway!

Yuh... 10 is just a degree of badness :)

For me the real difficulty in voting in this challenge is that there are no entries with big problems, all the entries are pretty good. I voted quickly, to go with my first impressions, and then went back and took more time to go over the pictures. What happened is that I ended up with the votes kinda bunched up in the middle - there were no really bad pictures IMO, but there also wasn't one or a few images that were so much better as to be just outstanding.

Thanks for the reality check. Just about the "worst" I could come up with was 15 sixes.

Given that we all vote differently anyway it's not like I'm subverting a universally used scale. I may not be using MY normal curve but then that's only one curve in hundreds. If having that missing from a challenge is subversive is it also subversive when I don't vote on a challenge?

Even normally what a 5 from me means in terms of how much I like the image doesn't match what someone else's 5 means.

This is all very interesting.

How will anyone know what vote you game him/her?

I'm putting it into the comments that I leave.
As per Ben (Konador's) print for comments/ scores thread.

Hi all, I have reviewed the Masters Free Study challenge and I must say there are a lot of wonderful photographs. The voters have their work cut out for them, the reason I say this is because I can see a lot of 7/8/9/10 votes in this challenge. And with only 69 entries they're maybe a possibility for a tie; Has anyone thought about that?
[with I could vote in this challenge - I love voting on great photos]

Finally someone with a brain.

I kind of like the way of voting. I don't think I would give anyone a 1, 2 or 3 but I would give a few 4's. Just because they are a little below average for me.

I am not voting so you all don't have to worry about a 4 from me.
I do plan to comment. :-)

I aslo don't think the photos are any better then the top 50 photos in the members challenges. I can't see the top 3 having higher scores then they normally do. Hmm...I could be wrong.

Using my subversive (perverted?) scale the lowest is now a 2.
10/01/2004 01:56:21 PM · #47
My lowest is a 1 for this challenge as it is for every challenge. I must agree with JS being that I don't think this 'Masters Challenge' shows that much improved photography over the usual challenges - more just less stinkers.

Having said that i have only breezed through.

Why aren't you voting on this Sonifo? This of all challenges has only 69 Photos. I would gladly have a 4 from you if you included a critique that might help me to improve some element of my work.
