Just as a FYI for 20d owners...I had taken the camera/bg-e2 battery pack/24-70L out to it's first shoot last night at a concert in a club...it had worked quite flawlessly and I was able to get a little over 300 photos in RAW mode in single/multi-burst shooting...only very very occasionally using the on-cameral fill flash.
Fortunately I was able to get the bulk of the shots i wanted when the concert reached the encore set, but all of a sudden the camera completely froze up...NONE of the menu buttons worked, couldn't playback photos, couldn't take photos, nothing...the only button that worked was the lcdlight...it didn't even recognize there was a card in the camera because there was absolutely NO number of shots indicated in the lcdscreen. The only peculiarity was the bg-e2 battery pack was VERY hot...so i'm not quite sure what happened and what was at fault..if it was because it is an early firmware...battery pack malfunction or perhaps weak in power (though the lcdindicator says it was 'full' even after 300shots with very occasional flash)...camera overheated... who knows.
I tried changing out the card which didn't do anything...but i didn't try the batteries as the concert completely ended by then...maybe a weak charge causes it to freak?
Any other 20d folks encounter any similar or unique buggies yet?

There has been a LOT of discussion of this over at DPReview. It apparently is not that uncommon. When it happens, remove and reinsert the batteries, and you should be set to go.
I'm concerned that the grip got hot. That indicates a high current, which lowered the battery voltage, which of course locked up the camera. I'd advise if it keeps doing this you should contact Canon. |

Do you mean BG-E2 Bettery Grip? Not BG-E3?

Out of curiousity, are you using Canon batteries or a third party generic? |

doh! yep, bg-e2 it is..edited post!
thanks for the good info kirbic on the lockups...while it is now vaguely reassuring that i'm not the only one, it is still a tad disappointing and troublesome wondering WHEN this will strike again in the future....on the PLUS side the photos i did manage to capture were absolutey stunning!
jpsetzler: i am using 3 bp511a, and 1 bp511 all from canon...while it is tempting to get those ultracheapo generics a friend of mine used them in his 300d and 'supposedly' had it 'fried' from them so i go with the 'official' canons though in the back of my head something cynically tells me these batteries are all coming from only a few select production plants that just slap whatever company logo on it.

Did your hot grip happen when running the bp511 with the bp511a? Those two batteries have different mAh ratings... |

thanks for the question jm, i did think about that at first, but the day before the shoot i went out and bought two additional bp511a, charged those and decided to use those because of the higher mAh ratings.
...out of curiousity though for future reference, is it NOT recommended to use two different mAh rated batteries within the same battery pack? I was always under the impression that it used up one battery first and then switched over to the next battery, as opposed to sipping a little power from both at the same time.
