I am looking for a web site where I can upload a batch of photos, and then let only certain people browse them. My dpchallenge portfolio only allows 10mb, and it's open to the public. I need more space than that, and I want to specify who can access the photos. Does anybody know of such a place?

Does your internet provider offer free webspace?

I think webshots can be set up that way as well as Yahoo Photos.

$30 unlimited space, private galleries, tons of bandwidth. Have bigger/better packages for pro sites if you want to sell. I've been very happy with them.

Nope. I live in the country and can't get DSL or cable, so I have a Direcway 2-way satellite account. N*O*T*H*I*N*G at Direcway is free, or even cheap. If I wanted to pay even more than I am now I could get a fixed IP address, but I already pay those bozos too much as it is.

Wow, that place looks very nice! It might be just what I'm looking for. I really like the features that you get with a Professional account. Very cool. Thank you!

//www.photobucket.com is a good free place with unlimited space and you can set up a password. I've not tried it myself though (the password thing).

//www.Ofoto.com and most of the other online printers allow you to maintain free portfolios and invite specific people to view them.
//www.MyFamily.com is specifically oriented towards inviting members of the affinity group to view newly-posted items. Free for a smaller starter site, only about $20/year for about 100MB.

You can set up galleries in PBase as password protected I believe.

I think you're right, but I remember them saying something about how it ought to work but they weren't going to promise high security or anything. pBase also costs a little bit ... |

Yes, I use photobucket too, but haven't done the password thing either, but it`s simple enough to do. |

I don't know what photobucket is like, but be ware of free sites. I have used 3 up till now, and all have changed their policy after a time or just disappeared.
PBase was free once. Now costs money.
ClubPhoto also was free.
InstantLogic just dissapeared one night!
So I think it is worth finding a good album site that costs the right amount & offers the service you want and you wont get messed around.

As I've mentioned before - we wary of free photo hosts, because more often than not you grant the host rights to use your picture however they please for as long as they please. ALWAYS check the T&C's thoroughly if you want to retain sole ownership of your shots.

I have been very pleased with smugmug and know of several DPCers who use it... it's by far worth the $30.00 a year for the unlimited space and absolute simplicity of uploading and organizing. Excellent deal if you ask me. :o) |

In spite of the trepidation of other members here, my vote is for Photobucket. I have used the password thing, and it's really easy. And free. And the terms of service are very simple and straightforward:

Yes, smugmug looks like just the kind of place I was looking for. I'm even considering a professional subscription. You get lots of great features for a very reasonable price.

True about the security thing, but places like Ofoto or Photoaccess etc don't even require a password to view prints, just the right URL. |
