Hi, I wonder if someone could give me a bit of friendly advice:
I've had a Canon Powershot A40 for a couple of years, and have been really happy with it, but feel it's time to upgrade...
I'm very much an amateur, but I'm hoping to spend about £250 - £300 on a new camera. I'm keen to have more control over depth of field, and would like a greater level of zoom, but I don't want anything that is over-complicated to use.
After reading a few reviews of various models, I'm wondering about the Konica Minolta Dimage Z3... Is that a good option? or can anyone recommend something with a similar spec that is better?
Also, I've only ever printed at 6x4 size with my 2MP powershot... what size can you go up to with a 4MP camera like the Z3?
Thanks in advance for any help,

I was kind of in your same situation. I narrowed it down to the Minolta Z2 (I don't know if the Z3 was out then), Olympus c750 and the canon S1. If you have the $$$ the canon pro1 and the sony f828 looked like great options, but were out of my price range.
I chose the S1 based on picture quality, features, and feel.
//www.steves-digicams.com was a big help, as was going to store and playing with all of them. Buy online, //www.butterflyphoto.com has great prices and have been great to work with thus far (I've bought 2 cameras from them).

You might look into the Canon PowerShot S1 IS, only a 3 mp but a 10X zoom, takes a very nice picture, can use auto or manual settings and very easy to use. My wife has the Panasonic DMC FZ10, a 4 mp with 12X zoom, also very easy to use with either auto or manual. Don't know about the prices in UK but in US are very reasonable. |

Some really good suggestions here. Personally, I have the Fuji S7000 and am extremely happy with it.
Kylie and Laurie's suggestion of the Kodak DX7590 I wouldn't dismiss either.. these are some very savvy ladies.. and it *does* look like a fine camera.
If you are willing to look for a used camera.. the Panasonic FZ10 is highly recommened by a lot of people on this site.
I don't know anything about the Dimage Z3 myself, but the Dimage cameras tend to have poorer picture quality than many, according to //www.dpreview.com, but then, other people swear by them as well.
I think the best thing to do, as I did, was go to your local stores and look at, and test out, and handle, some of the cameras in your price range and go from there. Good luck!

The fuji is a great cam, £325.00 at 7dayshop.com brand new!!
The only problem with my fuji is the DOF, you need to have it at full zoom to get very shallow dof.

Yah, the S7000 is the same way, although if you put it in Super-Macro, you can get some *really* nice DOF.
*edit* of course, in super macro, that DOF is limited to very close-up shots too ;)

It has to be a bargain then, at £325, I paid £350 for my 602 refurb, but to all intents and purposes it was "brand new"
7day have it new for £199
givin it away :) this was taken using the macro
Alas I think I am ready for DSLR now and will be getting my 10D any day now, If I have to sell the fuji I will miss it.

I recently started talking about the idea of a DSLR, but am now happily focused on getting the best out of my Panasonic, so much so I've bought another FZ2 for my wife, now to spend money on filters and a teleconverter 714mm MMMmmmmm :)

I'm totally ready for DSLR.. but, unfortunately, it's not realistic until next summer. Good luck with your 10D! You'll have a lot of fun :)

Thanks for all the suggestions...
Having read a few more reviews, I'm starting to think I'll also keep my Powershot A40 (rather than sell it) just because cameras like the S7000 look HUGE... you can't exactly carry them around with you all the time can you! So I might keep the A40 in the car - do a lot of people have a second camera ready for snaps?

I have an A70 I kept when I bought my 300D, and I've also just bought a small camera to carry in my jacket pocket.

I am going in the reverse direction right now . . . I thought I would still love having my Kodak 6440 to keep with me when I needed something really small, but after seeing the quality of shots out of the 7590, I can't see myself being satisfied with anything less. The 7590 is still pretty portable, so I will probably try to sell the 6440.

Isn't the Panasonic FZ3 supposed to be a small camera? I think it's roughly the same specs as the FZ10, but much smaller and without the hotshoe. You still get the 12x zoom with F2.8 throughout. You also get matrix metering which the FZ10 doesn't have, which makes it far more suitable for beginners. I would check it out! |
