The theme of 'Decisive Moment' is one that could make an interesting challenge topic. Defining it may be a little more difficult...

A 'decisive moment' photo would be one that is captured at a point in time as something particularly special or interesting is happening or about to happen. Lots of these types of photos are captured by pure luck, but a little planning and thought can be useful as well...

Henri Cartier-Bresson - Example 1

Elliott Erwitt - Example 1

Shots like these are usually quite candid, but not always. I think the trick to succeeding with it is to find the environment for the photo first and just wait for your photo to happen.

I like the idea, as well as the examples given.

How about this one?

Although it wouldn't score well on this site, it is a great example of a decisive moment. In some ways, I was hoping to see more 'decisive moments' in the current stop motion challenge but I've been a little disappointed thus far.

All that to say "I like the idea" but I'm sure there will be a number of threads started to discuss how to decide whether a moment is decisive enough to meet the challenge.

That's always the case though, so nothing new there :) A decisive moment will usually generate some amount of 'tension' with the viewer in anticipation of something happening, or a simple emotional strike of something that is actually happening.

A good decisive moment shot would also never appear to be contrived in any way.

This would be a great challenge. Here's my own favourite 'decisive moment':

Just so you know, that photo won the Pulitzer Prize in Photography in 1994. The photographer, Kevin Carter, later commited suicide because of the horrors he saw in his years as a photojournalist, and his own perceived shortcomings with the lack of help he was able to offer.

I'd love to see this as a challenge topic BUT I'd like to see it assigned to one of the longer challenges - not necessarily a month but more than a week...

Good idea...

I think this is a fantastic challenge for dpc!

The documentary/reportage photography, like what we saw from masters such as Herni Cartier-Bresson as well as photography from the Farm Administration Act and even the early life magazine, is getting more difficult to find every day.

I think the biggest challenge will be to explain that the decisive moment is not contrived or staged, it is documentary.

I expect that most true decisive moment photgraphs will get blasted for technical problems, but I think we will find more real value in this type of work.
