I am really tickled about the results of my mirror shot...yet I wonder if I made the right decision as to which one I entered. Do you think either of the backup versions I had would have fared any better, worse, or indifferently? I had some comments as to the softness of the shot, which btw was intentional. The other versions were sharper but I didn't feel they were as emotive. That may just be me. Anyway, opinions are greatly appreciated. It's so hard to decide what to submit these days. Thanks for your time!

I would have gone with edit 1, mainly because it seems to have the best focus. I'd have probably prefered your actual entry, but it seems a little soft?

Thanks Paul... like I said, the softness was intentional, to create more of a "memory" feeling, like fading away or something (my goofy attempt at the artsy-fartsy) but I think it might have just been seen by most as bad focus. The sharper ones just didn't seem as emotional but may have done better. Thanks again!! :o)

Sorry, that's me not reading your post properly. :-)

Like you said, I think my response is possibly what you may have got from voters. :-(

I like your challenge entry the best Laurie. To me the crop gives it a very intimate feel, it's kinda timeless with the focus and sepia. A wonderful image.....awesome!!

Hi there I absolutely loved your entry and gave you a high score, I quite liked the winning pics but they were not in my top 5. Your pic had a charming atmoshpere and you captured for me emotion in a snap, sorry you did not do any better, but honestly I feel your pic was underestimated.

Is it that the winning pics mostly the glossy, overprocessed looking type seem to be most popular, is this what professional images are supposed to look like? This perfect, poster, magazine front cover look I would be proud if I could create that type of image too, but for me artistically a bit of non perfection, grain, realism, gives greater emotion, sorry if I am not explaining to well, however I loved your entry!

best wishes

Lisa :)

Hi Lauriel

I liked your shot except for the bottom area. I found that very dark and distracting almost out of place.

Out of the 3 photos I think you made the best choice and I do like the just oof look as well and also the size and placement of your model. Edit 1 seems to have your model to far away so you cannot see if he is aproaching or leaving. Edit 2 has some background issues at the bottom left that look out of place.

Congrats on your 15th place. I can still dream of doing that.

Thanks y'all... you know how it is when you second-guess yourself on a challenge entry! I appreciate your comments and opinions greatly! :o)

Hi Laurie,
I like your original shot the most, it has an old time feel to it and the soft focus doesn't really bother me at all. I think you made the right choice for your submission. Edit 1 would've been my second choice, but I think the subject is just a little too far away to make an impact even if it is more in focus. Your original has more feeling to it, IMHO anyways. :-)

Thanks, Jen... at least I know I'm not senile and seeing something that no one else sees... LOL ;o)

Hi Laurie,
You made the right choice in my opinion.

I was floored when I saw this finish in at 15th place! I would have bet on a top ten finish.
There is a story here. The focus was perfect for emotional aspect of the story it was telling.

There is NO WAY this should have finished lower than a snapshot picture of a bird looking into the mirror (mine)
- this was a composition and a very well done one at that!
BTW, has Stetson called yet needing it for an ad?
:)

Thanks Brad... but your bird picture is so clean and "pretty," which is what DPC voters tend to lean toward. I might do well to learn from you and take more pretty photos than gritty ones that tell stories about life. I think it ended up where it belongs, and yours did as well... completely deserving of a top 10 finish. :o)

I agree with GeneralE and will be the second to say:
"Don't do that!"
