I was very pleased with this entry yet it failed miserably. Can anyone shed some light (pun intended) on what is wrong with this photo?

I chose that one because it was the most obviously backlit. Yet two of my 3 comments were confused about the lighting. These were my other choices. Would these have done better? Would the backlighting have been questioned on these?

This one was my favorite, but I edited a few blemishes out so I couldnt enter this one.

Please give me some feedback on these. I really appreciated everyones time. Thanks

Sorry for the edit. I messed up the photo numbers initially. Thanks.

Hmmm... I don't know what the voters were thinking if they thought your entry wasn't backlit. You can see it in the fringing and the obvious veins through the leaves, plus the shadows from the leaves in the background.

I think my main reason for not scoring it higher was the uneven lighting and confusing background.

Of your other two that could have been submitted, #2 isn't sharp enough, and I would have voted #3 higher than your submission. Again, for the more even lighting and the simple background. (that isn't to say that even lighting and simple backgrounds are always the right thing to do, just my preference in this case)

I like your 4th image in the way the clouds frame the leaf. So if you could have entered that one, it would have been the best of the bunch.

It probably suffered due to so many other leaves in the challenge.

I think the third image of yours may have done better. I like it a lot. I probably would have given the one you submitted a five. It seems really busy, but the third one I probably would have given a seven. It has nice contrast, and much better focus.

My backlighting while not really being disappointing since it placed about exactly where I predicted (4.5), I just love it so much and wish it would have done a little better.

This is what I almost submitted:

And this is what I did submit:

Thank you all for your feedback. My mirrors entry is doing better than backlighting, perhaps that will sooth my backlighting aches.

I came up with a big fat zero for team sports, and I am struggling with capturing the picture I had in mind for Stopped Motion. Touch hmmmmm maybe I can come up with something for that one.

Movieman . . . you are strange but refreshing. We can always count on you for something unique. I think I like the one you entered best.

the last image would have been greate. sometimes I also make some mistakes and chose not the best picture I have. So, I have decided to do this from now on: I focus on the challenge requests, set up in my mind a subject and composition, and start shooting that until I am satissfied with the result. no different subjects/compositions from now on. maybe I am wrong with this, but at least for some time I'll do this. If I'll find this is wrong, I'll surely find another strategy ;)

I think you picked the better of the two.

I like the third leaf picture (103638) much better than the submission mainly because it feels a lot sharper and cleaner. The submission is a little noisy/blurry/something, I would probably have given it a 4 or 5 (though I didn't vote this challenge). The third pic would get 6 or 7 at least.

I had the same problem with my leaf photo that finished even worse than yours...

Those darn't leaves!

Goodness forbid.

Now I don't feel so bad about the low scores I've received.

I rated it a 5. I think I rated most of the leaves similarly. In general, they didn't seem to have the grab factor.

I don't understand how anyone could miss the backlighting on it tho.

I think you only need to read other comments that one of your commentaters has given to other photos to realise they should be read with a grain of salt.

I was just wondering if anyone else sees my entry photo as "noisy/blurry/something"? I really appreciate all of the feedback, but I don't understand this one. I can see the tiny hairs on the edge of the leaf. I don't think it can get much sharper unless maybe the reference is to the background, which is intentionally blurred.

Comments?

Oh, by the way, I think either photo would have placed just as nicely Eric.

Just my 2 cents, but in all the shots there is a centered composition, and in the first two the top of the leaf is cut off. The shape of the leaf kind of make the eyes follow the lines to the top, but its not there. I like the last picture best with the green on blue.
