You either have a selectively short memory or you have become a much more enlightened person in the past 4 months. This diatribe you tossed off at me certainly does not show much respect:

Maybe this is the wrong place for you, if you're not ready to take on board constructive criticism. You already seem to think that your photos are great, why bother trying to improve? Hmm... against my better instincts, I'm going to take this thread further off topic, and reply to your comment publicly, which really should have been kept off the forums.

I gave this comment:
'Fits the challenge, but doesn't do a lot for me. Too much going on in the background, there is no clear focal point for the eye to settle on.'

You then posted the following comment on your picture:
'I'm sorry, but how could somebody give this picture a one or a two? Only two comments, so at least 3 of the one and two votes are un-commented on. As far as the 'stuff' in the background, I live in a big city (Chicago) and Halsted St., where this monument is located, is one of Chicago's busiest streets. Things like traffic lights, street signs, cars, and busses are going to show up in big city photographs. I think the monument in this picture is impressive enough to overcome any background distractions, and I consider the trees an enhancement and not a distraction to the photo.'

Your comment came across as defensive, and full of excuses and righteousness. I do sometimes wonder why I bother leaving considered comments for people, when it becomes obvious they are not appreciated, and I was baffled at why you ticked someone else's comment as useful which said almost exactly the same as mine. I agree I overreacted a tad with my comment, but I still stand by the sentiment that if you post a photo into a challenge, you really should not waste the people's time who do you the favour of commenting on it. I'm not saying you have to agree with all the comments that people give you, but you need to be able to take constructive criticism in a gracious way.
FWIW, I'm trying to grow a thicker skin, so people can be as defensive as they want about my comments and I won't care.

Some interesting shots in there... but you may want to split the photos over several pages. I'm on broadband, but it still took a hell of a while for that page to open.

Great pictures! But WHY would you want to go to raq?

Also - you should post the link to your pictures in the OUT and ABOUT section of the forums. I expect that a lot of people have these political threads blocked.

I completly agree with you Sam. Yes, this is a photography related site, that's what keep us as a community, but we all have opinions, feelings and worries we like to share, MadMordegon is trying to show us his worry of some part of the world that is in terrible situation, so what's wrong with that. I'm from Mexico and i had never post a comment of all the crap we have in here (and believe me, we really have) because i think is could be boring for most of you, but common, this is a global problem, if you don't have time for take a quick look at someone else's problems do not open the thread and keep going with your own.

The US has pulled a 150 million out of appropriations for Afganistan and Iraq to help Sudan. Meanwhile, I still do not hear of any ACTION on the part of the UN.

The Sudanese victims of the Janjaweed truly do not care about resolutions. They just want the violence to stop.

Well, somebody in the Sudan votes opposing the US 80% of the time at the UN. Maybe we should leave them alone and let them solve their own problems. Freedom they earn themselves will be sweeter and longer lasting. How about we go down the list and stop sending our aid to all the countries who almost always vote against us.

Those casting the vote are the same regime sponsoring the janjaweed, who in turn are the one's raping, mutilating and killing. It is this regime and many others like it around the globe who do not want us involved in their affairs. The delimna is with the victims. Either protect them or give them the means to protect themselves. The other option of course, is to just ignore it. The same option we have prior to any decision to get involved.

Still no action from the international community.

Maybe they are waiting for the US to take the lead so that they can complain about our overbearence.

Meanwhile.......children are being viciously assaulted.

Flash, why do you suppose no one is helping? (not a trick question with a political motive behind it :) My understanding of the situation is that the Janjaweed number is quite small and it shouldn't take too much to put them down. Of course, the Sudanese government, who are backing them, is another matter, but it doesn't appear that they are very powerful either.

Olyuzi,

Your question is precisely what I do not understand. I can't explain why the world stage is so silent (with action) on this extremely disturbing event. The country pushing for action is the US (with 150 million dollars) and handsitting on the part of others. I understand the political arguments about oil etc, but to me these do not hold up as the US is pushing for action and if they were only interested in oil then why would we care. Then there is the argument that we only care because it is election time and the administration is trying to garner black votes. I don't buy that as most voters have already made up their mind, including the Black vote.

No, I think this is principally a humanitarian crisis, with the UN doing what the UN does. Talk, talk, talk. Meanwhile, children, little girls, are being grossly mistreated. I just shake my head. I pary for those souls, but I shake my head. This is truly disgusting.

Hope this reply allows some insight into my thoughts.

***Flash, the only thing I can think of is that there are things going on behind the scenes, in that region of the world, that we don't know about. It's truly horrendous that such mistreatment of innocent people are not being stopped.
