Hello
I just got a used Canon Powershot G1 to convert to IR and I was wondering what your experiences with the Stitch Assist mode are. Do you think it works better than just trying to do it the old fashioned way? Thanks

If it's like the Stitch Assist mode on my ancient PowerShot S10, then it's a great help. It allows you to keep the frames aligned horizontally (for a horizontal panorama) even in hand-held sequences. You can still get good results in regular mode with a tripod, but without a tripod in regular mode you often end up with crooked sequences.

Stitch assist works great, but even better when you use it with good software like Panorama Factory (there's a free version too). The nice thing about Panorama factory is that it also adjusts the images for brightness and other factors making the stitching seamless.

Check out this 5 image panorama taken from a moving boat without a tripod.

Since I don't know a lot about the G1 it's hard to say for sure whether or not you should always use the Stitch Assist mode for panoramics. The reason I say this is because you might not have full manual control of aperture and shutter speed with Stitch Assist and this could limit you. If you make panoramics without using the Stitch Asist than it is very important to have all of the exposures with the same aperture and shutter speed settings so there isn't visible differences in exposures from frame to frame. I would say to definitely use Stitch Assist if you can have full manual control especially for setting a small enough aperture for a wide depth of field. It is real handy and I have used it quite a bit on my Canon Elph. Can your G1 shoot vertically in Stitch Assist? If so, you might want to consider that orientation as well to really get the most amount of pixels in your images as well as getting more of the sky and forground in the shot. I have only used the Photo Stitch software from Canon and it's not too bad but you need to learn how to manually use it because the auto mode is kind of a hit and miss deal. I still usually have to manully touch up some seams in PS so some of the other programs out there might be more effective if you get real serious about making panoramics. Good luck.
