I'm just curious what people tend to use when setting exposure settings. I personally used to mostly do use full auto most of the time, but now I'm using almost strictly manual, or ocasional aperature priority. I'm not really sure how most other cams work, but I'm also curious how you adjust the settings. The buttons on the back of my oly make changing settings on the fly almost impossible. Do most cameras have that same problem?
just curious....

In most cases, I use Aperture Priority, unless I have a need to use another mode.

I also use aperture priority most of the time. In the majority of situations, I find it is more important to me th have constant aperture to control DoF than it is to have constant shutter speed. there are of course exceptions.
When shooting with flash (I only have a manual flash) I use full manual mode. |

Same here...I hardly ever use the auto modes.... auto portrait is the only auto I get consistant results that I like from my D70

I also tend to use aperture priority, but found shutter priority to be invaluable at the Southern Wisconsin Air Fest this summer.

Majority of my photos are shot using the Manual mode

manual nearly 100% of the time. Only on auto exp if the ambient light keeps changing rapidly (ie. inside to outside multiple times.) Auto focus in dark situations.

Eric , witch is the best way to shoot in manual, do you carry a light meter ? |

Strictly manual! I adjust as I go..thats the great thing about a preview screen! Although its not always right?

I shoot in P, A, S and M.
Oh, that's most of them.
Depends what I'm shooting.

I almost never shoot with auto except if I don't have the time to set exposure. I mostly shoot in manual but also shoot in shutter priority when I feel I want a faster shutter speed for low light hand held shots (and usually have to up the ISO as well). Also, for the upcoming stop motion challenge I'll be shooting in shutter priority since I can access faster shutter speeds than in any other mode. I have an Oly as well, so see if your shutter priority speeds go higher than the other modes. I find aperature priority useless on models with small CCDs as I don't find the aperature really makes a difference in DOF. |

Auto, probably 90% of the time. And usually I try to keep the lens on the sharpest f-stop.
And spot meter. Although I use it less than I expected after I upgraded to E-1.

I usually shoot in P or M modes. I guess there's no in between for me. :-)

I always shoot in "M" but perhaps I should experiment a little more.

i think it all depends on situation ..but auto is out of question. dont use auto.

I use aperture priority a majority of the time. I switch to manual if I need to adjust an exposure by more than two stops one way or the other. I use full auto when i'm making snapshots and using a flash most of the time. The automatic mode allows me to get consistently good shots in those situations.

Prolly 90% of the time A, unless I'm either trying to freeze or blur motion, then T, If I'm shooting in mixed light (ambient indoor & Flash) I'll use M.
Only time the camera is in P or auto is when I hand it to my wife.

TV (Shutter Priority), Manual, AV (Aperture Priority) and, very rarely, P only with Evaluative Metering.
Mostly, when walking around, and if light permits, I have the 10D set to TV set at 1/1000 sec, with Partial Metering and Continuous Shooting on, index finger never far from the jog dial. When I change Modes, say to A or M, the F717 is also usually set to S 1/1000 sec, ready to fire.
I spot-(Sony) or partial-meter (Canon) every shot.

Use A when I have my tripod or bright day, otherwise I need to atleast get a 1/90-1/125 shutter or it will look blurry

I use "M" mode all the time. Sometimes if I need to shoot fast for some reason and I have no time to set my camera then I shoot in "P". |

That is interesting, in shutter priority on my Oly I can only get up to 1/2 sec exposure, but up to 8 sec in full manual -- no difference on the faster end, 1/1000 sec minimum shutter speed.
---
I use manual if I have time to set exposure -- it is the only mode I can lock the exposure continuously. I find this needed because the WB is also set with the exposure (the presets are never right, grrr), so I set the WB by locking the exposure and then adjust the bias of the exposure in manual to get the exposure I want instead. It is a mess.
I will use Aperature priority if DOF is significant and Shutter priority if stopping action is needed. Contrary to the above, I find the DOF affected significantly if I am close enough (or zoomed in far enough) to the subject. As stated above, manual provides access to slower shutter speeds, so I don't use shutter priority for that.
Auto exposure works well and provides consistent results, but I do not learn anything by using it -- so I never do.

I shoot M 98% of the time. The other 2% is either Av or P mode with more emphasis on Av.

My camera is almost the same way.. in Shutter priority I range from 1/1000 - 3 sec.. but in Manual I range from 1/10,000 to 15 sec.
So shutter priority is pretty limited, compared to full Manual.
Having said that, I generally shoot in Aperature priority unless I'm indoors with very low ambient light.

Apperture Priority 90% of the time, I also have it permanently on -1/2 stop, I like it that way. |
