I'm just discovering some of the custom functions available on the 10D. I have one favorite which is the ability to select the jpeg size embedded with the raw image when shooting in raw mode.

The 10D has 17 custom functions. I know that using these are a matter of personal preference but I'd like to know what you use and why. And do you use them for every photo that you take or specific to the kind of photo you want and clear it afterwards?

I use the embedded jpg function to embed the smallest possible jpg into the RAW file. It gives me a lot more images on my card that way... I also use the 1/3 stop increments on exposure settings rather than the 1/2 stop. I use the rear curtain sync flash setting occasionally also.

is there matrix metering in the custom functions?

John, I used this for a few days when a friend of mine lent me his light meter. I couldn't set the camera to what the light meter said was the right exposure so I changed it to 1/3 stop increment... but I found the two exposure indicators of the viewfinder confusing. :)

Most light meters will allow you to select 1/3 or 1/2 stop increments. Maybe some of the older ones won't do 1/3 stop tho...

Metering is not a custom function. It's set with a button on the top of the cam...

It was a new Sekonic light meter and worked wonderfully with the 10D. With the custom function set to 1/3 stop increment, on the viewfinder the exposure level indicator shows 2 bars instead of one which to me is confusing so I reset it back to 1/2 stop.

The meter modes are not set by a custom function on the 10D. There is a button on top of the camera near the display screen which when pressed allows you to change between metering modes (center weighted, partial and evaluative). I believe evaluative is equivalent to matrix on other cameras though I could be wrong.
