My daughter, smartypants, has a solid 6.75 in Backlighting right now (a full 1.25 above her dad). She went off to school this morning walking two feet off the ground. Her Travel Guides is a respectable 5.52.
I have to admit her photographic "eye" is quite good for a 12 year old!
Whoops, posted this with my daughter's account (I'm strangeghost).

I don't hope for more. 14 comments and 1 favourite and sitting at 6.3! I think that's brilliant! |

That may have been true until everyone with cataracts & 7 year old monitors came in during the night and voted.
Now down to 5.6111 with 72 votes.
But then again that's about my average, so who knows, maybe they are right on.
:) |
Guess I like it better than the masses.
Still hanging around 5.60 with 156 votes, 6 comments.
Oh well, at least I have my Travel Guides shot still over 6.25!

Well, I was quite excited by the first results too... After 12 votes I was at 7.600 yet now I am at 5.2500 after 150 votes :( That is strange, because few more of my photos from the same serie are among the best on the other resources... I wonder, did the level of DPChallenge fall dramatically over three months that I did not participate or there is something wrong with me and other audiences? As much as I can not judge myself I used to give 10-s gladly when voting, but in the "Backlighting" contest I could find very few respectable entries :(((

Just curious relative to Travel Guides challenge: What is everyone's interpretation of a good photo vs a bad photo with respect to it's overall depiction of the desireability of visiting a particular area? In otherwords, would a single, small feature depicted in an image which could apply to 85 different travel destinations be rated equally with a photo that showed a specific location and really served to attract many people to that location - all other things being equal? I tended to rate the former much lower and the latter much higher. Was that wrong? (There's still plenty of time - I think - for me to go back and REthink.)

I don't think it's *wrong*.. it's your particular take on it. I think I scored shots that made me say, "Yah, I'd love to visit and see that" higher than shots that didn't.. and if it was a photograph of a single, small feature that I particularily liked, and was presented in a way that made me want to visit, then it got a higher mark from me.

Take an image that represents an area as a visitor might see it. Enter landscapes, buildings, people, animals or detail studies that might be used in a travel guide book to your chosen destination.
Just my opinion, but it doesn't say anything about it's desirability. |

I tend to think of anything that is used in a travel guide as being something that is there because of it's desirability and it's power to cause a person to say, "Hey, yah, I'd love to visit that!" But then, that's just *my* opinion :)

If the photo is good, it's good! Whether or not I want to go there is irrelevant. If the photo is bad, mark it low and leave a comment as to how it can be improved. This popularity voting trend is starting to get to me. People are voting low votes for such stupid, immature reasons. I don't like spiders - 1. I don't like flowers - 1. Look at the photo and vote it for technical merit, presentation, composition, etc. Don't just vote it down because you don't care for the subject. gee zee pete |

Marjo, How does that mesh with the following from the voting rules?
"While voting, users are asked to keep in highest consideration the topic of the challenge and base their rating accordingly."

I was referring to this particular challenge of travel guides. When the challenge definition covers every possible scenerio: landscapes, buildings, people, animals or detail studies, every photo meets the challenge.
In all challenges, of course, the highest consideration should be the topic of the challenge.
OOoooops. Sorry Backlighting people....How did we get sidetracked on travel guides?

Same here! I am still at 5.72x, but I hate that it dropped from 5.95x and no reasons given. 11 comments, people seem to like it. But what's the deal?

I think a Church enthusiast and a surfer would very different requirements from their Travel Guide. This just has to be wide open to interpretation.
Some backpackers activley seek gritty realism from their guides - package tourers go for sand, blue skies and sea - Saga Louts go for architecture, tranquility and fine dining - and the 18-30 crowd go for clubs, drink and sex...
