By doing this we are not going back to the basics. Adjusting the picture, darkening some parts and highlighting others is a big part of photography. So this challenge makes no sense at all. Sorry.

I agree...I think the "basics" are being seen here as shutter, aperture, composition...but that's only part of the process

We discussed really getting "back to basics" in this thread.

Anyone figured out how to rig a digital sensor for Pinhole Photography? (I haven't checked this site in a while.)

I'm sure it's been said before either here or in the other thread...

Those with nice camera's have a distinct advantage. Those who shoot (or are able to shoot) in RAW mode have a distinct advantage.

Too big of an advantage IMHO.

We have had lots of these discussions in the past and I have never liked the idea. As was mentioned already this type of challenge would be very camera dependent and the differences in the quality of the images would be almost impossible to determine if they were because of the photographe or their camera. This only works well when everyone is shooting the exact same slide film with an SLR. When you use any other method then there is no way to soley judge the capabilties of the photographers and I assume this was the intent of this challenge suggestion.

Another reason why I am against this kind of challenge is because I don't like shooting images that are less then ideal even when I am shooting for these challenges. For a no post-editing challenge I would have to crank up some of my in-camera settings and then I would be stuck with images where those settings are irreversible. These in-camera settings prevent you from having as many options later on with the images when you go to use them for other purposes. I would really hate to take a great once in a lifetime shot and be in that situation.

I appreciate the intent behind this challenge suggestion but I feel there are too many uncontrollable variables for this kind of challenge to be very successful.

I like the idea. I don't have photoshop or paintshop so all my post processing is minimal at best. I also took this picture (probably my best and was the 7th with this camera) and it has no post processing done at all.

Well, darn it, I can't seem to get the thumbnail working, so I'll try a link instead.

Your photo far exceeds dpc's 150k maximum. ;)

That's because it was never resized. I found DPC in June but it took me about two or three weeks to figure out how to resize correctly. The picture was taken in February of a bouquet my husband gave me for valentines day. I would of course resize it if it was meant for a challenge. I just wanted to show a good picture that was "right out of the camera" with no extra cropping or editing. I still like this idea for a challenge.

Did you not see the winky face??

Sigh, internet sucks for jokes.

Missed the winky face. And your right. Just read any thread more than two pages and you see humor and sarcasm go right over the head (and its usually mine!). Besides, I just wanted to show off my picture! Well, I really like the challenge idea too. Not asking anyone to switch back to the "old way", just every once in a while a challenge of this type. I really like this idea cause I still can't really figure out just what I'm doing with all those programs (neatimage/coreldraw that I hate unless I just want to play with the "effects"/just downloaded temp version of adobe elements). Any more opinions on a challenge like this?
