OK folks, help me pick my next upgrade for a Digital Rebel. The choices are:
Canon 550ex or equivalent Sigma flash (I have a Canon 420ex)
1.4x teleconverter for a 70-200mm f/4 lens
Two Hoya polarizers for existing lenses
I'm leaning toward the flash. Bear in mind that this is a hobby that I don't get paid for (though freelance work is possible), and that I'll probably upgrade to the EOS 20D within the next 6 months. Thanks! |

Polarizers, if you don't have any already. Most useful filter by far for landscape photography.

I'm not sure what your motive for buying the 550 is if u already have the 420. You may want to consider the ST-E2 transmitter for using the 420 off camera.

The 550 enables me to use flash exposure compensation. With the 420, my subject is well-exposed, but the background is black. Plus, I can use the 420 as a slave unit.
Another possibility might be to get one polarizer for the 70-200mm and the teleconverter. |

Polarizer.
You can get flash exposure compensation by installing the hack on your rebel.

I've been hesitant to install the hack, but maybe it's time. |

If yer gonna upgrade to the 20d, don't spend money to 'fix' shortcomings on the rebel...

Rather than buy two polarizers buy one for the largest lens and a stepup ring for the other. Use the money you save for other toys.

Alien Bees are quite nice. However, you really need to stop and think about what direction you want to go with your photography. |

Shannon instead of the Alien bees, I'd get the new 580EX flash, since you are planning on getting the 20D sometime...I'd add an ST-E2 flash remote to go with your 2 flashes.

I would think that the Alien Bees would be better- more powerful lights with softboxes. I might even be able to charge them to my office, since I take a lot of product photos for work. |

Good point! Can you get them to pay for the 20D too? ;-) :D
