I'm trying to figure out what flash to get to my D70 and the two obvious choices seem to be the SB-600 or SB-800. There's an approx. difference of $120 here in Sweden between the two of them and I wonder if anyone could give me some input on the bang for the buck in this case.

I've googled around a bit but havnen't really found a feature comparison chart anywhere, but I'm sure some of you have them both or at least have tried them both or so?

As far as I can tell, the SB-600 isn't even available yet and there is no current date for release.

There is a difference in price in the US as well. However, forget about the idea that the sb-600 is not out yet. The SB-800 has a wider (as in width as well as tele focus) flash range than the sb-600. You might find the sb-600 to be ok if you're in doors and just doing maybe portraits. However, if you want to go outside and drop some fill onto a scene, you might find the end result to be lighter in the front and dark in the back (if you used the on-camera flash on the d70 you know what I mean). I will be buying the sb-800 because I don't want to say that i'll only need the sb-600 now, what if i grow into wanting the sb-800. While the 600 would make a great salve, it's just not where I am going right now.

That's true. I ended up getting the SB-800 for my D70 and have not regretted it. My reasoning was, if I'm going to invest in a flash, I might as well invest in the best that is available.

You might be right that it isn't available. It's listed, but as "out of stock". Thanks for your inputs, I think I might go with the 800 just for being on the safe side. After all I'm up past $2500 on my camera investment so far anyway with the (*awesome*) 80-200 zoom as an addon to the D70 kit and some accessories.

So far it's all been worth it. I'm just learning and scratching the surface of photography yet, but it's nice to be old enough to get the expensive toys :-)

Here's a really inspiring link I found hunting flash-info:

Here is a comparison of the specifications of recent Nikon Speedlight models. Including the SB-800 and the SB-600.
//www.bythom.com/flashcompare.htm

The SB-600 have a faster recycle time.
The SB-800 can be used as wireless master.
The SB-800 have strob function.

FYI. The D70 can be used as the wireless master too. It's a built in feature.

Sure. But not the SB-600.

Bought the sb-600 today. Playing...lots to learn!

the sb-600 can be used wirelessly, but not as the master. COrd or on the hot shoe, yes. I hit the sb-800 not available thing...and wanted one now!, since my mortgage company decided to send me a $250 check today, and also $100 cheaper. When I come into more money, I will most likely either upgrade to the sb-800 (something new will be out by then) or just buy a new one and then have MY SLAVE! Muwahahahahaha! She can do my dishes...naked, and...wait, wrong thoughts of my slave again....SORRY! (C;

I've finally got my SB-800 now (and it rocks!), and you're right - after reading the manual and the net for about 2309802 hours I finally managed to remote trigger the SB-800 with the built in flash. (What, setting the SB-800 to "flash group III" wasn't obvious?!?)

Unfortunately the on-board flash only works as a trigger, you can't use it as a fill-flash or anything. If I get it right, with a SB-800 on top of your D70, you can have it fire during exposure too. Guess I'll have to get myself a bunch of SB-600:s as slaves soon. Any day now. Just need that lottery-win first..

Not sure what you are asking here. Define your question a it and I may be able to help.

I have the sb600 I got it because it was cheaper with the intent to get the sb800 later. THESE FLASHES ARE MADE FOR THE D70. The SB600 will do everything on top of the camera that the sb800 will do except commander mode.. For this you need the sb800 on top of the camera to talk to the remote flash(s) (up to 9 remote flashes) You can set up the sb600 as a remote but it has to be in manual....My thinking was get a flash, learn to use it, and then save the extra $175(cdn) for the real power.....the SB-800. I love this flash. and I can't wait to get the 800 but for indoor and fill shots there is no comparison to the onboard flash...whatever one you get they are both GREAT.

I think this is a wrong statement. It still works as a TTL and M, both with exposure compensation.
