...or do others have problems trying to shrink a picture to fit into the 640 @ < 150Kb file restriction and still have any of the resemblance of quality in the original?

I starting to wonder if a lot of the pics that I have voted on here in the past have not suffered that same fate. Nice sharp pictures that have been jpeg compressed to death and appear oof in challenge.

I'm bailing on the Travel Guide challenge because my shot has a lot of things going on and I just can't get it fit the restrictions without looking like a jpeg disaster.

I have a 8MP cam and I am finally getting good at using the whole frame when I take pics, I just can't see going backwards to be able to play here.

ED: Omitted word.

What program are you using and what steps do you take to resize your entries?

In PS I use save for web but only after I've converted the file to 8 bits/channel and sRGB profile. In save for web I resize then use the optimize function to optimize the file to be no more than 150K.

Other programs have save for web features but may apply too much compression.

Andy:

150KB at 640px is actually plenty to get a prettyy detailed submission without suffering from JPEG artifacts. Take a look at this tutorial for some insight.

There is usually a need for additional sharpening, after any done to make the image look the way you want it to, that is expressly for the purpose of making the image appear correctly for the choosen final output. This is true for print as well as resizing for a different digital format.

Could you go over the final steps of your work flow? For example, I resize, sharpen and then compress. The new setting of 'bicubic sharper' in PSCS can often be used to combine the resizing and sharpening, but not always. Once the image is resized to be 640 on a side, I have not seen much of a loss in quality with the levels of compression needed (usually around 80%) to get <150K.
