someone else want to explain it to me? It's not composition, it's not content, it's not that it's black and white... lighting perhaps, or the fact that it's duotone, and the only other thing could be the grain....
Now, I don't complain, ordinarily, and you can't change the results, but I don't get it..... I know this sounds petulant, but I'm done.
Thanks to all but one of those who have commented on this shot. |
The grain/noise was a big factor for me, also the blacks in the second one are not as dark as they could be. Also there is a cool feel to them, I would say in general (at least to me) warm tones are more appealing than cool tones. I like the lighting in the first one, in the second one the shadows arent really striking or powerful. I vote partly based on the final image... the first one seems finished and polished while the second doesnt. And I think both received the scores they deserved... the second picture was good (5.88 is a very good score imo)but not excellent.

I voted Heida's a nine and yours a seven.
When I was voting I never compared the two but taking the time to review now I feel Heida,s had better lighting that rendered nice skin tones. with yours I had no problem with the grain. IMHO it was the fact that the cropping was to tight with the elbow part of the head out of the shot.
Sorry thats my personal taste. |

i didn't get a chance to vote on either photo but i would have voted Todd's image higher. while i would rather the crop be a bit wider to accommodate the rest of her arm, i love the pose in Todd's pic. it seems much more relaxed and natural so it has a much more intimate feeling to it. the grain and the choice of tone gives it a very vintage look.
both images are lovely, though. well done to you both!

Them's some pretty sour grapes. But on the other hand, had you not submitted, my craptacular image:
would have come in 79th! |
I guess we have a similar sense of humor. I thought that one was hilarious. |

It's fine to be disappointed, we all are at times. But to be bitter as you feel the voters got it wrong? Let's face it, what is more likely:
a) The photographer, with an obviously biased view, has it right and all the voters got it wrong
b) The 300 odd voters (averaged) who do not have such a bias between them got it about right.
I thought my shot would have done a lot better, I loved it ..... but recognise that others did not, for whatever reasons they have. So, I love it, I have it framed at home, but I am not bitter as others did not like it as much as I did ... or maybe just preferred other ones better.
I got good comments, and agreed with them, especially as most were about things I was not happy about in the photo but could not do anything about for practical reasons (and I did not have time to reshoot it).
With the case of the two photos you compared I don't see them even in the same league. Both nice shots, sure, but the ribbon winner has the lighting perfect, the composition just right, the sharpness just right ... in MY opinion. The ribbon winning phot had that certain extra something. It is also not just a case of comparing with that one photo, but with entries in general. Take out Heida's photo and guess what ... you'd not have the ribbon, you'd have placed one place higher, as everyone (other than grigrigirl).
It seems ridiculous to blame 300 odd voters for not having a clue and assuming you know better. End of the day beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and people do not always see things the same way you do.
So, either just shoot for yourself and enjoy that, or submit here and accept that at times your ego may take a hit.

I know it always sucks to get a poor score but to me, the comments are a lot more important than the actual score.
In your case Toddh, the comments you got were very good and well deserved.
That alone should make you happy about the shot... espcecially if YOU like the result ;) |
