Shame about the subject matter, but was trying to start using some lights. Comments on the lighting very welcome, subject matter is what it is :)

White wall behind, lit with a strobe. Octobox softbox high and camera left, white reflector camera right.

I should also mention that if they look kinda like passport photos, that was deliberate, though hopefully the lighting is better than the average photo booth.

Gordon,

Lighting isn't bad - Just a hint of glare on the face from the softbox side. You are on the right track.

Take a peek at this site: //www.vividlight.com/articles/1615.htm
You should try the Rembrandt technique to get nice shadows - unless you are striving to the calm flat look.

Other note (supposed to be funny): My fashion coordinator (a.k.a. wife) won't let me wear white t-shirts under a shirt like that. You would have been busted by mt fashion cop. lol

The light, (by the regulations) has to be 'flat and shadowless' in this case, so nothing too interesting. I was taking some shots for official documents, as well as trying out soft boxes/ rear lighting and stuff.

On the t-shirt thing - I suddenly realised that shooting with a white t-shirt wasn't going to look so great and threw something on on top :) I don't get let out, outside, like that either...

I think on the exposure/ glare front I need to get a flash meter to handle highlights any better. Was a bit constrained by the room size, in that I can't move the soft box back any further or turn it down any more. Though I guess then I should just decrease the aperture.

Another lighting test from today. I think looking at it, I need the softbox camera left moved around further towards the front. Unfortunately there was a wall in the way. The shadows on the face are the main problem I see, which I think would be fixed by moving the softbox.

One thing I've found is that Alien Bees B1600 and B800 are far far too powerful for working in and around my flat. Any other comments and suggestions very welcome.

Softbox high and camera left, hair light is a unmodified strobe, high, back and camera right. White reflector lower camera right in front. Still got a lot to learn :)
