Mine is just over 5, think many don't stop long enought to make the connection, maybe I should have spelled it out in the title.

I'm actually doing OK... 6.2245 after 49 votes. Strangely no comments as yet...

I went to bed at a 4.53...woke up to a 5.59. Within minutes, it was a 5.63. Now, after 2 more votes, a 5.42. I was expecting 5.0, so 5.42 is fine with me. It's one that I really seriously debated entering at all, because it's kind of a stretch... but it seems to work for someone, I guess! I thought since I did go to the trouble of traveling, finding the perfect place, photographing it in between downpours, and editing it to look as "fairy-tale" -ish as I could make it, I might as well enter it... I like it and it would be a great place for a model shoot. I chalk it up to a great discovery, no matter how the score turns out. :o)

I didn't expect (although I hoped) I would get the score I have. I woke up to a 7.02 and I am now at 6.9608 with 51 votes. Definitely a personal best. I am in a happy place right now. ;) I was going to go to our local renaissance festival to shoot some photos but decided not to at the last minute. I am glad I decided not to. I spent several hours with my wife and daughter composing the photo and shooting it. After weeding through all the 50 shots we took I decided on the one I entered with only slight editing. I kind of agree with TechnoShroom in that we shouldn't vote down the use of figurines and stautues, etc just because they are figurines and statues. Some of the photos were nicely composed using them. It does seem a lot of people had a mental block with this one, though.

I think I out-of-the-boxed myself again.. O well...

Right now I'm sitting at a 5.6ish score.

I am getting torn up for the model I used though.

Oh boy...I just finished looking through them myself. And I thought I was disappointed with the "Hope" submissions.

I believe there are only 3 pictures in this challenge that deserve more than a 5.

I was expecting much more magical looking pictures...

:(

After I vote myself you'll have to tell me which three you think are good.

I am new here and may be I don't understand the rules correct but for me there was too much photoshop on a lot of Fairy Tales pictures. Are they all ok? As there was a face of a girl over the tree the multiexposion is prohibited as far as I know, then another one with the wolf and RedCap which looks also as montage, then some "mysterious" blur which looke for me also from PS. May be I am wrong, correct me. Actually my question is HOW FAR CAN YOU REALLY GO IN EDITING IN PHOTOSHOP? Thanks
08/30/2004 08:25:32 AM · #35
Welcome to DPchallenge!

Fairy Tales is an 'Advanced Editing' challenge. There is further detail to be found under the Advenced Editing Rules section of this site, but basically...

Unless explicitly stated otherwise you can 'tidy' up the shot a little in Photoshop, using dodge and burn for instance to help remove unwanted items. A little bit of cloning also.

You can desaturate and adjust levels etc. if you apply it to the entire image (basic and advanced editing)

Some of the pictures entered could be achieved a lot easier with post processing in Photoshop. (i.e. blur effects etc.) This is where the challenge comes in...

My own entry shows motion blur on the subject. I achieved this during the exposure by:

Using a 4x ND filter to allow a long shutter speed (6 seconds)
Moving the subject after 5 seconds had elapsed.(hand held with a black glove against a black background)

This can take many attempts to get the look required. Have a look through some of the recent challenge entries. A good example under loud with a speaker and the letters 'l', 'o', 'u', and 'd' bouncing above it. (excellent work) This would have taken 5 minutes in photoshop, but hours to do as a photograph.

Regards

Chris

Thanks for reply Chris. I think I know you shot (it tastes good and sweet). I rated it quite high.

I just started looking, and I can't vote on these, but I would like to comment that I think this challenge would have been better had it been a special, two-week challenge. I bet with an extra week to work with, more people would have been able to set up more fanciful pics.

Just two cents from the newbie who isn't even a member. Ignore me at your leisure.:)

hmm, Present photographic evidence that those imaginary creatures and characters you read about as a child are actually real!

Aren't the main characters in fairy tales offen animals?
A picture of a common fairy tale animal would be evidence.
So I don't get your remark.

You can blame me for the lame challenge- my suggestion was was posted word-for-word. I really expected more fun and creativity. There are some really excellent entries, but there were also many shots where the make-believe subject still looks obviously 'pretend'.

My inspiration for suggesting the challenge was a friend's narwhal tusk, which looks like a real unicorn horn. I bought a smoke machine and tried several elaborate setups, but never got anything bettter than a "so what" shot.

In the end, I had to think up something from scratch just like everyone else.

Actually, this should have been one of the most inspiring challenges I've seen (based on the skill and artistry of many of the photographers on this site), but either those photographers didn't enter or no effort was put into the shots...very disappointed, this could have been great!

I've only seen a few that I'm really impressed with. Too many toys. Not enough makeup!

I was planing to go to a museum to get a shot for this challenge to get into a realy old house but time was too short, could not find time when my model could come, then I could not find a decent costum rental place. Might be fun trying again in a free study.

Maybe this would have worked better as a longer challenge.

In My Humble Opinion it is more interesting to show the Fairy Tales in real life as it was mentioned in the task then to make up somebody into a witch or something. It is finding something fairy in our ordinary life, isn't it challenging?

Who says there aren't fairies in my ordinary life? My photo is of a real fairy who lives in the woods by my house! I didn't make anyone into anything.

They are real!

Somehow managed to get my shot submitted about 45 seconds
before the deadline (I was in Ohio & Arizona since Thursday
and didn't have any way to get the shots out of the camera,
into a PC, PS to edit, etc..)

All in all, with 78 votes in so far,
Avg Vote: 5.7436 seems fair considering...

This is my first member challenge entry. I actually signed up because Fairytales seemed like such a fun project and it was. We (my model, helper and I) had a blast taking pics. I love some of the other pics, there was a lot of creative thinking that went into them. My score so far isn't too bad either :).
