We're trying to get together and shoot more often for her portfolio and my practice. Here are a few outtakes from the latest session. There are a few other sets that need to be looked through but I just edited these 7 on the first go around.

I don't have the photos updated with the settings or lenses used yet; that will be coming so you'll have to check back if you're interested.

Comments and critiques welcomed.

Thanks,

Kev

Wonderful shots, Kevin. The DOF on #4 is wonderful as is that on #2...it is just deep enough, wonderful! My favorite would have to be the seventh one due to it's lighting. Her face is very soft and it works great. Would you mind to post your lens and lighting set-up?

Thanks a lot for sharing. Can't wait for more!

You know... there's this other photographer on the site that gives awesome detailed critiques. Oh wait, that's you! Well... I'm no Kevin Riggs, but here are a few thoughts on the photos:

First, you have some great shots here. And a very beautiful model to work with. I like how you are playing with lighting in each of the pictures. Here are some specifics for each:

623_2364: I like how the lighting profiles the face, giving definition to the nose and cheekbone. On the other hand, the shadows on her chest create confusion. As does the changing backgrounds between the left and right side of the top of her head.

624_2447: The fill lighting works good here except for the tiny bit of shadow on her cheek, caused by her shoulder. That could almost be ignored... but if I had one wish, it would be for a darker background behind her beautiful blonde hair. At least, great rid of the specular highlights in the trees... dodge them or clone 'em out if necessary.

625_2518: This is the kind of background that really helps. If 624_2447 had something more like this (around the head) it would be better. As for this photo, I like it except I feel that the light is too bright on her face. Tone it down just a bit and her face would be perfect. I would also try a pose that is a little more flattering to the left edge of her body (her right side). Something that creates a bit more of a feminine curve.

624_2412: I love the softness in this picture. And especially the DOF shown in tack on sharpness of her right eye while her left eye is slightly blurred. Eyes, lips, cheeks, hair, ear ring, shoulder, they all come together nicely in this pose.

625_2548: This is another example where the background around her head is friendlier than the one in 624_2447. I like the angles, from the rock she is sitting on, to her body, to her legs. And even the opposing tree branch on the right lends itself to the angles in the photo. I don't know why this one is not more of a favorite to me ... perhaps she needs more of a smile as in 625_2573.

625_2573: This one is my favorite. For the same reasons as 625_2548 but with the addition of a playful smile. I think the change in lighting (to her right side) also helps.

626_2613: This one has some confusing shadows. Her face starts out, perhaps, just a hair too bright. Then there is a shadow on her neck caused by her shoulder blocking that same light. Likewise, the shadow on her leg, just above the ankles, appears to come from the rock blocking that same light. If she's going for a serious look, well, she's got it down pat. But I prefer her smile...

Overall, I do think these are great shots. Each of them would only need minor improvements to make them even better.

Thanks for sharing and letting us have a chance to critique a little. :-)

Hey, David,

Thanks for the comments. We had fun on that session but it was a hot day both temperature-wise and directed sunlight-wise. The clouds broke and we got a lot more direct light than I was ready to deal with on the first set. I'm working through editing those to see what I can salvage out of them.

These were shot with mottled light coming through leaves and tree branches so I am happy with how even we got the last sets.

From what you posted, looks like another great shoot Kevin!

I'm not qualified to provide critiques, but let me say that I like the lighting in the last 3 shots by the river. Perhaps there is a little bit too much fill (from a reflector?) on the face in 625_2518 (although I love the shallow DOF!).

Keep up the great (and inspiring, for those of us who are trying to improve) work!

I would love to know what settings you were using for the 2nd portrait. Could I see your EXIF? Thanks :)

I went through and commented on most of the shots. All are very competent so I felt the need to pick on more niggly aspects, particularly on the composition and lighting.
