Those are very nice... the monkey and the meerkats are so cute! But I have to say that I like the eagle pics best... this one is my favorite. Thanks for sharing!

The eagle shots were very nice. In camera zoom, cropped in post-production, or were you able to walk up really close to them? Amazing shots from a non-DSLR unless you did use one.

faidoi,
I was only around 6 inches away from her. I saw her (her name is Tewa according to the zoo sign) sitting right next to the fence and thought she'd walk away (she only has 1 wing)when I came up to her, but she just stood there and let me take her picture. I used my Olympus C740 UZ but hardly had to zoom. I had to put the lens through the hole in the chain link fence so I didn't get it in my pictures. She didn't care for that sometimes and would talk to me. She is an amazing creature.

Other than the third-last eagle, this one's my favourite, with some extra editing:

Wow, with a point and shoot? Very impressed. It gives me hope!

Hey, you zoo shot people...are you constantly going to the zoo to look for good opportunities? How often do you go?

Nice shots everyone!

Hehhehee

We have a one year paid membership to each Zoo in our area:
Fort Worth Texas Zoo (By far the best)
Dallas Texas Zoo

This way we can come and go as we please :) Plus a few other small perks.

This is just one of my favorites that I had in my portfolio from a recent trip to the Fort Worth Zoo:

I recently cleaned out my portfolio to cut down on space and I have not uploaded many revised shots yet.

Why do all of y'all have to rub it in? I went to the zoo on Tuesday. Took my faitfull Rebel with me (she goes everywhere of course!) and at the first exhibit go to take a shot... dead batterie! (UGGGGGHHHHHHHH!)

Now I have TWO batteries!

If you are interested in animal photography then the zoo is a great place to start out, but remember that wild animals will almost always react differently to zoo animals. Most zoos have a yearly membership that allows unlimited access for that year and not only are you helping out the zoo but it means you always have someplace to go to take photograhs. A zoo membership may also give you free or discounted entry into other zoos around the US.

I tend to go to the zoo around three times a week, but I also do event photography for them and I am a member of ChimpanZoo. I usually spend each visit concentrating on one animal and just park myself at the exhibit looking for shots. Unless you are really lucky it is rare to get the 'amazing' captures in a two minute pass of an exhibit. Of course it also depends on what type of image you are trying to get. There are so many people doing animal photography these days that to get noticed you need to have the rare, amazing, wow shots that may take you a year to capture.

People usually try their hardest to hide the fact their photograph was taken at a zoo, but dont forget that having the zoo elements like fences and people in a shot can be just as good if you use them correctly.

I've been thinking about trying to get a job at the zoo so as to have the benefit of shooting before and after work :)

Mandy, I think your photos are great. The eagle shots are beautiful.

I used the Tokina 80-400mm at 280mm, Manual Focus, AF centered, and Canon RAW mode.

do you think youd be able to post a small 100 percent crop of the sharpest part? Im just wondering becase *if* i make a jump to dslr, i see that lens is reasonably priced, and i just want to see the 100 percent crop.

Here is a series of test shots I did with the Tokina 80-400mm lens and a 2x converter.

Shot 1 - Tokina 80mm:

Final shot - 800mm (with 2x converter):

This is a crop from the final shot:
As you can see it says made by "Chaparral"

I shot these in Canon RAW mode and processed using the Photoshop RAW feature. Actual info is on PBase.

The full series of shots can be seen at my PBase gallery:

Mandy,

Well done. Mr. Holden taught me a great deal about Zoo photography. It would be worthwhile to contact him and set up a meet. As you are already in Texas it would be much easier than it was for me traveling from Michigan. Both Robin and Penny are wonderful folks.

Nice shot I wish I had caught this one :) LOL
Where have you been my friend? We have not heard from you much.
I will PM or email you before the weekend is over.
We are trying to get ready for another art/craft show coming up this Sept. If you have been to my site you may have read the info.

Mandy did you get these at the Dallas Zoo?

I have a shot of a Kingfisher (sp?) bird I entered in their photo contest last year.

I went back earlier this year and I did not see it in the aviary.

Are you going to enter any of your shots in this years photo contest? The deadline is September 30th 2004. They have various entry levels, i.e. amateur, pro and etc.

Dallas Zoo photo contest info from my website:

Title: Deadline Dallas Zoo Photo Contest
Location: Dallas, Texas
Category: Announcements

Special Announcements
Other Information: Deadline for all submissions! Submit up to (3) 8x10 prints. Color or black & white. Must be taken at the Dallas Zoo between March 29, 2004 and September 30, 2004.
