If it's still on warranty bring it back for an exchange. Better safe then sorry. Just like a loose tooth the more you wiggle the higher the chance it will fall apart.

It sounds like something has come loose. Very likely whatever holds the barrel in place is fastedned with screws or similar fastener(s). It's possible one or more fasteners has worked its way loose. I wouldn't ignore the issue, get it fixed before additional damage is done.
If you are still under warranty, send it to Sony. If not, try to find someone locally who services Sony equipment.

If it's under warrnaty it should not cost you anything but the price of shipping. Take it to a store that sells Sony digicams and ask them to take a look at it.

i bought it at circuit city, you think theyd be able to help me out?

Most cameras warranties cover 90 days for both parts and labor and after that the company will only cover parts for up to a year. That 140 dollars is the labor charge. I work at wolf camera and it costs a lot of money to repair anything.

No. Their customer service is less then stellar. You will have to pay the 140 bucks to fix it I am afraid. :(

Mine is a bit wobbly too, but I know why. I got a bit drunk at a friends wedding and I dropped it a bit, but it's not so bad. Just sometimes it sounds like there is sand in it when I turn the ring. Still have alot from my warranty so for now while it is working I'm not doing anything. By the time I get close to warranty neding if it gets worse I'm gonna turn it in. Warranty's are pain in romania, most timees they send them abroad somewhere for repair, and it sometimes takes months...

I don't understand why you have to pay anything since your camera is still under warranty. I had sent my Olympus in three times in the first year, mostly for dust clearance out of the viewfinder, but one time for replacement of the LCD in the viewfinder, and I never got charged anything. I would read over your warranty carefully. Doesn't Sony have a one year warranty?

I don't know if Circuit City will help or not. They did help me with a laptop I bought from them that needed a new motherboard. I took it to them and it was shipped back to my house 3 weeks later, no charge. Where did you get the $140 quote? How long ago did you buy your 717? Did you get an extended warranty with it? I thought all reputable camera makers covered their products for a year of Parts & Labor, especially on high-end models. I would be surprised if Sony doesn't. Any other Sony owners know what kind of warranty the 717 has?

The alternative is to do it yourself. There is a report on dpreview of someone who did it succesfully, unfortunately without pictures of the whole operation.

You have to take off all outside casing of the camera and part of the internals. The problem is with the internal screws around the swivel mechanism which have come loose.

The report ends with saying something like you should only try it yourself if you are experienced with taking apart modern electronics (and of course putting it back together again) or if you are a micro-surgeon.......

The 140 is usually a deposit. If the repair work is covered by warrenty then frequently you'll get money back. Any camera shop you take the camera to will ask for a deposit. Too often people send in the body for work and then don't pick it up.

The problem is that people will send in cameras for "warrenty" work when the problem isn't actually a manufacturing defect. In the US, warrenty only covers defects in manufacturing. It does not cover anything you do with it once you leave the store. Drop it, crack the barrel against the table, have it fall into a toilet- none of these are covered. And the people who are repairing cameras are looking for a way to say the repair isn't covered.

You have three options.

1) Pay the $140 to send the camera in and hope it's covered. You should get most of the money back, minus shipping costs.

2) Try and repair it yourself and totally void the manufacturers warrenty. I don't suggest this one unless you are seriously technically inclined. If it still doesn't work at that point you have a real problem.

3) Deal with iffy focus until you can get a new camera.

Wherever you take the camera, verify that they will send it either to an authorized repair center or Sony. Also expect 6-8 weeks turnaround. It's summer, so the camera repair centers are swamped.

Hope this helps.
