Looking at the high scoring entries for the past couple of challenges I wonder if I should just suck it up and start pandering. Obviously, the DPC voters never tire of close-ups of eyes. I actually tried one for the Blue Moon challenge but couldn't bring myself to enter it. I don't mean to sound bitter but I'm starting to feel very discouraged with my placements. I don't expect a ribbon but I would like to place in the top 20 or 30 at least one more time before I get completely discouraged and give up.
Here are some recent rejects--the first is for the Macro challenge and the second is for the Once in a Blue Moon challenge. Should I have entered these instead?
I actually had a couple of recent entries added as favorites during the voting so I'm not entirely in the dumps. I want to be original but I'm human and I also want my work to be liked. I feel very sad and discouraged tonight.

Go out and shoot what interests you and don't enter a few contests. Do some reading on photography with images in the book to get new ideas. Just go somewhere you have never been or thought of going to and sit around for awhile. See what strikes your eye. Just take a break for a little bit and see what happens.

I like the eye but don't know how I would have scored it because of the hue shift. Probably a 7
As far as pandering goes. It's a matter of how you look at it. If you think it will degrade your integrity, it will. If you look at it as another way to sharpen your skills, you will. This is a place where you can take pictures that get you to think about the process of taking pictures. These skills will help you become a better photographer when you are out doing whatever type of photography you really enjoy.
Maybe joining another site that is more focused on what interests you would be a sanity supplement to this site. |

This seems like sound advice. I'm feeling less sulky and miserable today. To get my mind off my own work and get my brain activated, I did a few Critique Club evaluations this morning. That helped quite a bit. |
